It's a sparkling new year -- in the north, icicles glitter in the silver sun; in the south, bright lights twinkle on the water. One can hardly sleep at night for the reflected glow of everyone's shiny new-forged Resolutions. So it must be the right month for a poetry contest topic like this:
Gems and Jewels in Arda
From the Arkenstone to the Silmarils to Elessar's Elfstone, they are items of great significance throughout Tolkien's works; the often-perilous center of many tales. Choose your favorite and tell it from any perspective you wish. The usual poetic license applies. No length or form guidelines this time, but as usual, no epics, please.
The contest begins NOW and all entries are due before midnight on January 31. Once submitted, the poem will be considered 'final' and no further modifications should be made. The entries will be judged by member votes after the close of the contest.
If you have any questions, just email me (click on my name at the top of this message to get my email address).
NOTE: Please reserve this contest thread for the poems alone during the contest period -- out of fairness to all, please don't post comments here about the poems until after the closing date. You can, of course, send praise privately in email or chat.
Get ready...have fun...and GO !!!

The Spell of Lorien
Let no stain lay on my land,
Time tarry, taint be slowed.
Quiet the quays for the Queen of Air
In dark no death but diamond stars.
Heal all hurts, hope renew.
Whisper, will of the white stone,
Right rede the Ring of Air,
Right rule the Ring of Adamant.

this subject seemed a bit out of my reach of Tolkien knowledge until i realized that my art project this month contained a "jewel" story...i just love Synchronicity, don't you?
"Starlight Starbright"
Brilliance captured in delicate glass
Elven in detail, design and class
The shine of a special star...strange but beautiful glow
From one of the precious jewels Morgoth coveted so!
Galadriel's gift in this phial that she gave
Would Frodo's brave life one day save
Heralding the birth of hope...(we pray)
With a powerful light to guide his way.

The Elfstone
Great emerald jewel so bright
Capturing the warm sunlight
That shines through the leaves of Spring.
Set in a silver brooch
In the likeness of an eagle soaring
On outspread wing.
Power from this emerald stone
Is given to its bearer alone.
'Twas Galadriel's gift fit solely for a king.
All the hurts of Arda will mend
By the touch of the king's hand.
And prosperity he will bring.
The name of the one to come
Is that of the emerald gem...
"Elessar"

THE SILMARILLI
Two trees with glorious light
Their brilliance held captive
Encased in crystalline unbreakable
Artistic beauty - thrice the sight.
Endowed with heart and soul
Perfection personified
Hallwoed and blessed
Desired, lusted, and stole
Vows and oaths, kinstrife and war
Hidden and hunted with greed, in pride
Treasure worthy of the grief
Sung in countless lays and lore.
Deeds of bravery - foolish and great
Intense sadness; great despair
Passionate love; everlasting hope
Wrapped, entwined, bound in fate.
One light soaring - evening and morn
Another sunken in the depths of the sea
The last burning in the fires of the earth
In the end - reunited - reborn.

A Jewel Among Hobbits
Elen síla lúmenn omentilmo
Adventures he thought would be a fun thing
To travel the world and hear the Elves sing
But the Bane of Isildur is nothing to fool with
And fear freezes heart, when dealing with REAL myth
Now leaving the Shire is something I dread
Persued by a wraith, crownéd yet dead
I'd much rather be at home and in bed
"And nought will come of it" as the Gaffer once said
A Jewel of a Hobbit, reaches inside
Where love and innocence still abide
He touches all lives from the small to the great
The doom of the world on his actions will wait
May THE STAR shine on the hour of our meeting!
To protect the Shire and his friends he must go
Into a cruel world he did not want to know
But need drives him on, the errand won't wait
All the way to the Enemy's gate
Along the way there was much help to meet
There was Gildor and Tom, and a King yet to greet
Elrond's great council, and dear Gandalf the Grey
Hoping still to salvage the day
And each day it becomes heavier
Only Sam really knows the pain that's inside
The hurt and the fear I still try to hide
Such a loyal friend, he insists that he come
But if he was to die, I don't want to be the one
To tell Rosie......
Our friends are gone now, the Fellowship broken
Like Deágols bloody throat, all because of this token
Out of duty and chance do we try to push on
What little hope we had is finally all gone
And each day it gets worse.....
But here at the End, here with me, Sam
As I try to be all that I am
Or at least what they want me to be
Help me now in my hour of need
I am broken, carry me my friend,
to our destiny, or at least to our end
And tell them, "Frodo tried"
Out of love of Hobbit, Dwarf and Elf
Did he become much more than himself
And at the very Cracks of Doom,
The Age of Men came much too soon
Listen now if you are able, to the footfalls of this fable
The Halls of Elves no longer sing, over the seas have gone the Rings
But one bright Jewel, still shines in sky
A Jewel of a Hobbit, and we all know why.

Ok, here is my entry.
Ascahithien
The Silmarils
Gold and silver
Shining in the night
Rays of dancing light
Captured forever before they fade
Before the enemy's plan is laid
Fëanor, Oh Fëanor!
Thank you for the gems you made
Before the enemy's plan was laid
For in these gems,
The light of Valinor shines
To with stand the test of time
Yet because of your greed,
The light is lost because you would not heed
The warning of the Valar you should not shun
For now the gems are lost to the light of the sun

I would like to request that everyone vote for the November and December 2003 contest entries, too. There were only a few entries in both of those contests and because of the busy end of the year activites of our members, Olórië had not received very many votes. So I would like to encourage everyone to take a look at those two months and submit those votes along with your January votes!
Thank you,
Stormrider

Have you come up with a poetry topic for February yet? This is a short month and I need A LOT of time to decide on what I would like to write about; and then I need A LOT of time to get it on paper! I know several of our members are pretty comfortable with poetry and can put excellent verse together without too much time or trouble, but alas, I lack that ability!
