Ah, this relates to his own character, Turin. I did not know he had done any other, earlier work on the Kalevala material, or maybe the "book" they speak of here is the Turin material? Will be interesting to see it either way...

Dusted off some books and started searching for any mention of this. Found an essay from Verlyn Flieger, published in her book Green Suns and Faerie pgs 185-201 aptly titled "Tolkien, Kalevala, and 'The Story of Kullervo'". As I understand it from the essay, Tolkien read the Kalevala, decided to rewrite the Kullervo story, then wrote Turin's Story. Flieger suggests that Kullervo might have struck a chord with Tolkien because Kullervo lost his parents, just like Tolkien. (I'm being superficial here. Flieger spends some time comparing Kullervo's situation with that of Tolkien's). Apparently, as written in the Kalevala, Kullervo, the character, is one dimensional and the story had inconsistencies. Tolkien reworked the story to flesh it out and remove the inconsistencies. Flieger dates it between 1912-1913, before any of the earliest Silmarillion stories. Verlyn Flieger edited the book that is going to be published. Fan
