Where are you guys going to be on May 10th? I am going to be at the Movie Theatre with my son. Threatened to take Steve, but our son volunteered instead. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqOfrcgWDLo

OMG! I'm going even if I go alone, but my friend Chris would probably go with me! Or my daughter, Desi!

Oh! Good. I thought it was only for one day, May 10th. So it will run longer like a regular movie? I should check it out tomorrow.

I went to the 1:30 show this afternoon. Different than I expected. There were about 7 in the audience including me. But afternoon is not prime time!

I liked learning about Tolkien's early years in school and friendship with his buddies. I didn't realize it would be such a large part.
It was interesting to see what young men did back in those days for fun and adventure. Of course, these were more intellectual (and well to do) sorts of young men. They drank, but I wonder when JRRT started smoking a pipe.
I liked the images conjured up while he was at war. Whether it was just war itself or the fever coming on as well, it was cool too see.
I had hoped it would have gone more into his language creations and starting to write his Arda.
I thought his love story was very good and what he said to Edith when he left for the war was perfect to show her what he loved about her. But I agree they could have built on the Beren and Luthien angle more. But then they didn't really go into any of his early writing.
I would have liked to have seen some of his inkling group and discussions. Perhaps that was after he started The Hobbit and more while writing LOTR.
After he was a professor and had several of his kids, I thought they could have aged JRRT and Edith a bit more. They still looked young.

Just came from seeing this. It started really strong but kind of fizzled at the end for me.
The early scenes of his school days and his friendship with the Barrovian Society were very well done, as was the romance with Edith. Drunk Tolkien yelling in Elvish on the Oxford campus in the middle of the night was hilarious.
The scenes in the trenches were suitably horrific and I loved how they incorporated fantasy elements in his fever visions. Pretty sure I saw Morgoth or Sauron in the clouds and there were definitely some wraiths and balrogs. So cool.
When he got back from the war though, the movie disappointed me. No mention of The Silmarillion at all? That was the story he was most passionate about, his mythology for England. I realize that The Hobbit and LOTR are more well known but I feel like this skipped a huge part of his life. Even just a few scenes of him writing in the hospital or telling Edith about some of the Lost Tales would have been nice.
And at the end, just a cursory mention of the names on the headstones. Come on, filmmakers, tell us who Beren and Luthien were and why their story was so significant to Tolkien and Edith's life.
To me this was 3/4 of a solid movie that fumbled at the end.
