As a few of you know, I have been reading Perilous Realms: Celtic and Norse in Tolkien's Middle-earth by Marjorie Burns. Some of you may already know that at least some of the novels of William Morris influenced Tolkien's writing. Burns devotes a whole chapter to Morris and his Icelandic Journals, a travel log of two trips he made there. After a few paragraphs, I considered skipping this chapter. Thankfully, I didn't. Burns compared the "Journals" with The Hobbit and the similarities in setting, incidents and even in the characterization of Bilbo are striking, to say the least! (Just one example among many: A priest poked Morris in the belly and called him fat. Beorn did the same to Bilbo.) Fan

That sounds like it would be interesting to check out.

One of my favorite genre literatures is the 19th century travel journal, so I was glad to find that Morris' Iceland Journals are still in print. The JRRT "tie-in" makes it doubly worth my time and money...
Thanks, Fan!
