I am still reading through Homer's Odyssey and it is very mild compared to his Iliad. The Iliad is very descriptive with great detail given to each killing. It actually made me feel queezy reading many of the passages.
It will be interesting to see how Virgil describes the battles in The Aeneid. I haven't peeked at it yet since I have my nose in The Annotated Hobbit right now. There are many pictures from foreign book covers and flyers from the editors in England and America promoting JRRT's book. So far, I am enjoying it a lot.

It is interesting to see how one-thing leads to another here: I've just hunted up my copies of the Aeneid, The Iliad, The Odyssey, reading the various battle scenes to see how they compare with Beowulf, with Morris's "Roots of the Mountains," and then with Tolkien's own set battles in LotR/ Hobbit/ Silmarillion. LOL, lots more to think about!
