Thanks again to all who have participated in the previous Art Contests. Your work will be gracing the pages of TR for some time to come.
Since we have some members who are valiantly involved with reading The Silmarillion, it seems more than fitting that TR’s February/March 2005 Art Contest will be… “Your Favorite Valar” You may enter this contest as many times as you wish and all pieces will be included in the final contest judging. We hope to receive enough Simarillion art to use as the theme of our 2006 Calendar.
Deadline will be March 31, 2005 Please enter your pictures on this thread and email a “consent of use statement” to MajahTR@aol.com

This a tough contest! First reading and finding a valar I like and then deciding if I can actually draw that one or not! I still don't know which one I am doing!!!!

I ended up doing Yavanna because I found a description of her as "sometimes a tree with the sun a golden crown" So that way I did not have to draw a person or a horse becuase my actual favorite valar is probably Oromë! Maybe I will still manage to draw him!

I got to thinking about all the resources and wealth that the Earth is made of (gold, silver, copper, bronze, iron, rubies, emeralds, diamonds, garnets) and I began to like the idea of doing Aulë as my Valar. He is strong and loves skill and crafts and his lordship is of the substances of Arda. Here is that earthy Valar......Aulë! [/size] This is animated and sparkles, so give it a couple of minutes

I decided I would try to be a bit more free and less restrained when I painted this picture. Rather than earth tones as I did for Aulë, I wanted to use some cool colors this time. Here is that cool King of the Sea......ULMO!

I have another idea in mind, ;D as a matter of fact......HOWEVER, if I am in the painting mood, I really should go back and finish Bilbo in the tree in Mirkwood!

I would have to say this is my fave valar. I edited some clipart and drew in the bow and arrow with paintshop. Then I gave the image a pastel filter.

Magpie's magpie bird that she posted a link to in another thread inspired me to do up this valar representation! Of course that is Magpie's bird she made and then the flower is a picture I took of one of my flowers last year with a watercolor filter added to it.

Well, I kind of got into it and finished one today. It's not really a picture, I don't guess. But I'm thinking outside of the (my) box.
Main image done in Adobe Illustrator and text added in Adobe Photoshop.

Hey, Magpie: I really like your Art piece! That must be how the skies looked during the Battle Under the Stars, but w/o the 'sky writing'. I don't do people as well as horses so if there is ever a contest about horses I'll sure try to enter if I can figure out how to get my art on to the computer! What are you studying in college Magpie? I entered college when I was 40 years old. I loved school-started out to be a Geologist, but ran into a little problem called Math. To be a Geologist you need the Caculus however, I could not get past Intermediate Algebra. Change of major & 6 years after beginning a BA Ed. in History/Government/Political Science & Earth Science. While in college I became involved in student government rapidly discovering that my younger classmates had a much different agenda than yours truly & the rest of the 'old fogeys' in the student body. I turn 64 this year & have my Gold Card which allows me to audit any class (w/enough room) at our Community College FREE! Now if I can only find the free time! I want to take more art classes first. I took a lot of Art in both high school & college.
