Parmastahir You have quite a collection I would love to see the monthly illustrations but I realize what an undertaking that would be. I see that you will be doing a full calendar spread on the calendar of the month with the illustrations for each month displayed. I like that idea! Save each page once you create it and after 184 months, you will have completely displayed each calendar and can link each one to its cover.

Hi Desi -
There are perhaps 28 calendars that I have not been able to acquire (yet!) I have a 'secret code' on the website to tell which ones I own and which ones I do not: In the year column, the year is bold (e.g. - 1973 ) if I own it, regular text (e.g. - 1969 ) if I don't. For some reason, it has been difficult to obtain the recent Minotauro issues from Spain. I have written to the Spanish TS (with no luck yet).
Stormrider - If I do the math correctly, one calendar/month at 182 calendars is 16 years! I am thinking that the rarer/less common ones (the issues of the Tolkien societies/Beyon Bree) are the ones I will list. For instance, BB printed only 65 of each of the calendars they issued. But the original artwork can be very cool! Even those total about 40 calendars. So there would not be any repeats for a while. And who knows what I'll discover in that time?
Thanks for your posts!

Yes, it would take many years to accomplish the task of presenting all the monthly pictures if you went month by month. Whew!
It is a good idea to start with the rare issues, your favorites, or those that have the most interesting art inside. That way the most important and/or intriguing ones will be available first.

The 2006 TR Member Art and 2006 Entmoot calendars arrived this week. So they are now on the website. Support TR by picking one or both up from Cafe Press! And if anyone picked up the 2005 Member Art calendar and is willing to part with it, please let me know. It has the same artwork as the 2006 but a different cover. I would love to add it to my collection. No suggestions (as of today) about the next calendar-of-the-month. If you have a favorite that you'd like to see, please let me know. Thanks all for looking in at: www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars

There are so many to chose from!
I am curious about the "Beyond Bree" Black and White calendars though.
Of course, I have always liked Alan Lee and John Howe so any calendars with their illustrations is fine by me.

Thanks for visiting. Your BB suggestion is duly noted. I'll pick out one of my personal favorites. For an "amateur" (basically contributions from its members) calendar, some of the issues are quite detailed and have excellent illustrations. Desi Baggins visited and asked for the 1985 A&U calendar (Inger Edelfeldt illustrations) yesterday. So technically, he's first in line. Maybe I'll make it the "Calendar of the Fortnight" and change them out more frequently if this gets to a popular feature. As they say in Chicago, vote early and often!
Am planning to attend the Tolkien conference at the University of Vermont in early April and display some of collection for the first time ever.

Desi, Magpie, Zauber, Hilary, and I went to the Tolkien Conference in October 2004 at Marquette University. It was good to get together and meet each other (finally) and listen to the speakers. We also met other Tolkien fans, Laura, Ilyanne, and Almarae. Here is a link from our Palantír Post forum about our trip: tolkiensring.proboards30.com/index.cgi?board=News&action=display&thread=1087992544&page=1Zauber and Hilary also went to Tolkien 2005 in England and here is a re-cap of their trip from the Palantír Post also: tolkiensring.proboards30.com/index.cgi?board=News&action=display&thread=1127825340Do you have any links to the conference at the University of Vermont? We should post it on the Palantír Post (that is our news forum, by the way). I am sure others may be interested to know of this conference and might even attend it if they know the facts! I am sure the folks attending the Vermont Conference will enjoy your calendars.

Thanks for the links. Perhaps you met Joe Kraemer from Cincinnati in England. He and I communicate very often and share the calendar collecting bug. He also collects the books, and has an original "Gandalf and Bilbo" painting that he commissioned Ted Nasmith to do. I know Jan Boom very well even though we haven't met (another calendar collector who has helped me obtain many of the rarities in my collection). He's a hoot and calls every once in a while (which reminds me I owe him an email). A short story: Both Jan and Joe were attending that conference when the calendar signed by Professor Tolkien came up on ebay. So, I did not have to bid against the two of them. I got it for "a song" (in absolute terms and relative to some items I have seen on ebay with his signature on them). It's invaluable to me no matter what! Here is the information about the UVM conference. I typed it directly from the announcement that Nancy Martsch published in the recent issues of Beyond Bree: Tolkien 2006 (Apr 7 - 9); University of Vermont, Burlington, VT. Tolkien conference. Guest Verlyn Flieger. Theme "The Past, Memory, and History". Info: Christopher Vaccaro (cvaccaro@uvm.edu) or Michael Faletra (mfaletra@uvm.edu), or Directors, 4000 Old Mill, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT 05405. Here is the call for papers: cfp.english.upenn.edu/archive/20th/0496.html I know that Anthony Burdge (NE TS) will be attending. I got bitten by the calendar bug because a local Tolkien expert publicized a meeting held at the local library and he brought several of the A&U calendars. I was more than curious about them and how he got them. Would that I had a Galadriel to warn me as she did Legolas Greenleaf about the sea! On second thought, collecting them has been too much fun and I have a lot of friendships because of them. Bring'em on!

Hello to All - Added two more calendars to my compilation today: Inklings calendars (Cahill&Co from 1978 and 1979). Drop in, see how many of the Tolkien calendars you have and/or recognize . . . or just see how many there are! Check out the "Calendar of the Month" for March and let me know what you suggest for next month. Thanks. Parmastahir www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars

It's April and that means a new "Calendar of the Month" featured on my Tolkien calendar website: www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendarsThis month is the 1985 Allen&Unwin calendar requested by Desi Baggins. I was able to pick up five calendars that I did not own last month, and I was informed of a new one (one that I was not aware of). I hope to obtain that one and one other this month. Happy Spring to all! Away from the Green Hill Country, Parmastahir

I enjoyed the April Calendar of the Month by Inger Edelfeldt.
I noticed for the month of July, that the painting was of the Stone of Erech. I like how the artist captured the fright of Aragorn's horse--the whites of its eyes, the flaring nostrils, and the ears pinned back--very authentic.
I also liked the September painting and how the bodies in the Dead Marshes were so glowingly ghostly and melded into the rest of the dark blues in the painting.
I love the colors in the October painting for the Coronation of The King! Minas Tirith faded off into the background was a very nice touch as the Crowing takes place in the foreground. I really like this particular painting very much.

Am glad you liked the Edelfeldt illustrations. Have "a bunch" of requests for the May Calendar of the Month. Will pick one that is particularly interesting. Hardly seems possible that it has been two weeks since my last post. I have been able to acquire six calendars in that time: four that I had catalogued but not been able to add to my collection, and two that I "discovered" and have been fortunate enough to acquire. Will add them to my website when they arrive. I am thinking of changing the format to make it easier for visitors to access the site. Those without high-speed (cable) access find the current site slow to load because of all of the thumbnails that are there. I am going to change them all to links and a large table. All of the current information (and more that I am planning to add) will still be accessible. As always, comments from visitors are most welcome. Hope you all enjoy it! Parmastihir: I have dial up and it is slow to load. What about dividing the years into separate web pages on your site and keeping the thumbnails once you get to each year's page? I like being able to see each calendar cover however slow it is for me to load!

Thanks VERY much for your comment. I have been considering how to keep the thumbnails (which slow the download) but make the site easier to access. I have tried various formats for the site and actually have an old one (saved that program) that is pretty much what you suggested. I'll dust it off, update it, and put it "out there" to see what the comments are.

I hope you can do it soon, because now with all the new calendars you have added, I can't get anything to come up for me at all. It is stuck in "page loading" mode and the page is completely blank. I do other things on line waiting for it to load and come back and it is still blank and loading! Woah is me!
