Yes...I did! It just seemed appropriate.
Did you notice on the 1976 calendar cover...the word "Illustrations" is spelled wrong!? The Hildebrandts were really happy that it wasn't their names that were misspelled according to a note in the Greg &Tim Hildebrandt Tolkien Years book that I have!
I think the Hildebrandts are very talented. They take the time to use people dressed in blankets, etc., and pose them in certain lightening to visualize what they want to paint...and then they bring it to life on canvas with their brushes!
Although their characters aren't always how I pictured them (piggy-looking Orcs for instance), I really appreciate their amazing abilities. They really can paint!
A couple of my very favorite Hildebrandt paintings (and none of these are in the 1976 calendar) are:
Their painting of Smaug is fantastic! The way they captured his orangy-gold glowing scales, his fiery breath, and the plunder he sits on really struck me dumb! The detail in this painting flabbergasts me!
I also like their painting of Goldberry in front of her fireplace holding up a candle. Her green dress sparkles in the firelight and the shadows and shading are excellent
Another is Bilbo sitting at his fireplace surrounded by the Dwarves playing their instruments. This is probably one of their best in my opinion. This is one of the paintings that inspired one of my own creations in watercolor--although I don't have all the dwarves nor the talent the Hildebrandts have.
I also like the picture of Théoden and the Rohirrim talking with Ghan-buri-ghan. The detail on the chainmail and the light falling on the people from between the tree branches is very impressive.

It has been a while since I posted. Hope everyone's summer is going well.
I have updated the Calendar of the Month feature on my website. This month's calendar is a particular favorite of mine as I noted on the website. Please stop by! As always, am very interested to hear from you if know of or have any "new" (previously uncatalogued) calendars.

Parmastahir:
Well, now I know for certain what you mean by "Away from the Green Hill Country"! I suspected it had something to do with The Shire.
I like Ted Nasmith, too! I saw him at the Marquette University Tolkien Conference in Oct 2004 in Milwaukee, WI. You are very lucky to have some of his art autographed by him! I didn't have anything of his for him to sign much to my chagrine!
I had not seen Ted's version of The Three Hunters (Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli) and I was glad it was the May picture.
The detail in the leaves (July-Luthien) and clouds (August-Nazgûl) was very good. The leaves seemed so real and the clouds were so dark and ominous.
My favorite is the November picture--Riders at the Ford. It is very well done. The horses in the waves and the glowing white of Glorfindel and Asfaloth are so bright! Very nice.
I could not get the back cover to load when I clicked the link. I got this message: "Your URL is an Unreliable Resource Locator. Actually, we couldn't find the page you requested. Please check the URL" You may want to check it out.

Hi Stormrider -
Thanks for your comments on the CotM. I also like the November illustration as it is one of the signed Nasmith prints that I own . . . or should say owned. I had all six matted and framed, and gave three of them to my children for Christmas. "Riders at the Ford" belongs to my son; "Luthien" went to my younger daughter; "The Glittering Caves of Aglarond" is my older daughter's. I have "Minas Tirith at Dawn" in my office at work, "Rivendell" (my favorite) hanging in my livingroom, and "The Shores of Valinor" hangs in a hallway.
Re the glitch on the inside back cover: In my haste, I had created the link but not the html that displays that page. All fixed now. Unfortunately, it is not a very high res image (host site restrictions). So you won't be able to decipher much beyond the largest font size there. Even as a 2400x1800 pixel image, I can barely read the smaller text.

Hi All -
Have not catalogued any "new" calendars although the 2007 HarperPrism is out. So will add that one eventually. I did post a new Calendar of the Month for September. Hope everyone's summer was great.

Hullo, Parmastahir!
The boards here have gone quiet of late, everyone is busy with the activities of the new Fall season...
Just wanted to drop you a note of thanks for your lists of calendars and the online connections to the pictures. Kool Stuff! I never bought any Tolkien Calendars, and now, from some of the prices of the older issues on E-Bay, I wish I had become a collector!

Hi Andorihna -
I have noted the same that you have: the boards are rather quiet as, I assume, most people have better things to do that surf the various boards during the summer. Can not blame anyone for that!
You are more than welcome for the lists, etc. No thanks are necessary, though, as I created the website to both catalog my collection and share all of that information with fellow collectors (and those that happen to have a calendar or two and are curious about it).
I think what you wish is that you had a bunch of the older calendars and could have sold them to collectors like me! If you are the collector, you're on the wrong side of the eBay auction process. I have spent a not inconsequential amount of money to collect the nearly 200 that I have. That's because I have both a "reading" copy and a mint (either still sealed in the original mailer or shrinkwrapped) copy for most of them. Some are rather rare (either because a very few were created or because of condition, e.g. - an unopened 1973 Ballantine) which increases their value to a collector. But many are rather common and may be found on eBay several times a year.
Hope you like the Calendar of the Month for September.

Parmastahir:
Yep, I liked the calendar, thanks!
I remember a 1970's calendar that was part of a larger, single poster sheet from about 1975. That was my personal favorite, and I've got it packed away for the impending move, so I cannot remember who the artist was -- grrr. I'll see if I can locate it on the web, might be nice to price it!

ALL: Fall is officially here. Hope everyone enjoys the season! Added a "new" (previously uncatalogued) calendar to the website (1991 Laurin/Hamburg). Also updated the Calendar of the Month feature for October. You may check them out at: www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendarsAs always, I would be pleased to hear from fellow collectors. Away from The Green Hill Country, Parmastahir ANDORINHA: Did you find the poster that you were thinking of? The reason I ask is that I was contacted (via my website) by someone who is wondering how to find a copy of the Barbara Remington poster from the mid-60s - the one that made up the triptych covers of the Ballantine paperbacks at that time. Thanks!

Obviously I cannot read Italian but I knew right away that the August (Agosto) illustration was of Galadriel despite it's strangeness (though strange hardly covers it, wierd comes much closer). The others are interesting! Galadriel looks like a sinister witch like creature. I found her to be aloof & mysterious but never sinister in the books & movies. But this artist seems to see her much differently. I know that some purists believe that all the characters should look a particular way & no other. But I do not agree. It is called fantasy after all & everyone's fantasy looks different from everybody elses'in thier own heads. Before seeing any artists' conceptions readers have their own ideas what the various characters look like. In my own case as I saw many artists' visualizations they sort of got all jumbled up w/my own & I sort of synthesized my own private images. Informed by my own mind as well as the work of the numerous artists who have illustrated books & calendars over the years ( including Tolkien himself ) my vision continues to evolve. This image of Galadirel is certainly one of the most jarring I've yet come across however & I have no idea what effect it shall ultimately have on my minds-eye image of her! Vanye (Bonnie)

I have seen a couple of the pictures in the Italian catalog before including August's "Galadriel". It is a strange depiction with the red hair sticking out on the sides and the gobbs of makeup. I wouldn't exactly call her "sinister" but I thought she just looks very weird.
I also have seen January's "Treebeard" and September's "Gandalf and Shadowfax". I liked the hobbit house picture but I thought it was rather alone. I always thought hobbits lived in a community with other hobbit holes nearby! I think it was November that was very dark. I couldn't make out what the picture is but I am assuming it is a Nazgûl.

Hi Stormrider -
Re the "dark" illustration. Might you be thinking of July (Luglio)? It is "Avanti Cavalieri di Theoden". That's Theoden on Snowmane. You can look at the listings (in Italian) on the inside back page that I posted to run it down if that's not it. Thanks for looking in!

Hi Parmastahir:
November is the month that I can't tell what the picture is--it is in very dark colors--black, blue, and brown. I looked on the back page under November's description and that didn't help, since I don't speak Italian. I looked at each month's description and the list at the lower far right and still couldn't figure out which one was November! It seems like it is a dark turbulent night sky and that was why I assumed it was a Nazgûl.
July is in red and white! I could see Théoden and Snowmane in that picture.

AHA! Instead of going back to my photo file folder, I opened the website and checked out the November illustration. No wonder we're both confused. That illustration is from the 2006 Italian TS calendar. The title is "La Spada Che Eu Rotta" (The Sword That Was Broken). The illustration was supposed to be the November 1996 page. Can't figure how I got that one mixed in with the 1996 photos, and I usually view all of the images after creating a new Calendar of the Month feature. I just uploaded the correct image. Thanks for visiting my website. Without your question, it probably would have gone unmarked!

Oh! This picture is much brighter and very beautiful! It is a swan ship! Now the "Classificati per la pubblicazione" Boldi Maura concesio (BS) "Il vascello di Galadriel" makes sense!
I knew the dark picture that was originally posted there had nothing to do with Galadriel! lol!
hmmm...The Sword that was Broken--What I could make out of the dark picture did look like a long dark line of sorts.
I am glad my question helped clear up the mix up.
