Who do you think should be cast to play the characters in The Hobbit Movie?
The obvious, of course, are: Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, Andy Serkis as Gollum, and Ian Holmes as Bilbo.
Cast of Characters (at least the main ones): Bilbo Baggins Gandalf Elrond Gollum Thorin Oakenshield Dwalin Balin Fili Kili Dori Ori Nori Oin Gloin Bifur Bofur Bombur Goblin King Beorn Thranduil The Elven King Master of LakeTown Smaug (voice) Bard the Bowman
My choice for Smaug's voice is Sam Elliot. He has a very deep cool sounding voice.

I am not at all qualified to answer this, since I've never read the Hobbit I know! Well, I treied! It just didn't grab me the way The Lord of the Rings did, or even the Silmarillian. I dunno. Need to read it again. Though, maybe the movie might want to stir it in me. *sigh*

Hmmm....Now The Hobbit is what people read first long ago. That book made people ask for more stories about hobbits!
I read FOTR, TTT, and ROTK first like you did, Illy. But that made me go get The Hobbit. The writing is different than LOTR and it has a good sense of humor. It is much more simpley written but it is still an excellent tale. Please give it another shot!

Yes, definitely different. I had a hard time getting into it. There is no reason I shouldn't give it another go, or as many as it takes, I'm sure the reward will be great. Currently I am one a search for the Letters From Father Christmas.

I've been thinking about the Hobbit Movie vs the book and Peter Jackson's influence vs any other director, producer, screenwriter, etc. The personalities of common characters are different in H than they are in LotR. I'd call them more "comical" (in general). And some of the characters that I'd like to see again such as Aragorn, Arwen, Legolas, Galadriel, Gimli, Frodo, Pippen and Merry have no place in a faithful adaption of the book. If Peter Jackson is involved, I'd personally like to see an adaption that is faithful to his vision of LotR. But, this would be only loosely based on the book. Another person in PJ's place could be more faithful to the book which would satisfy my loyalty to JRRT's vision. I'm in a quandry. Fan

Fan! It is good to see you again.
I agree with what you are saying about the mood of The Hobbit movie. I wonder if there will be some way to keep the hobbit storyline similar in feel to the book and then add in the back story (Gandalf and the White Council) with the feel of PJ's LOTR movie so tie in and lead into the seriousness of The One Ring and Sauron's search for it.
Bilbo's adventure does have some pretty scary parts to it that would be good keeping a PJ feel to them, such as: the three Trolls, getting lost in the Goblin cavern, finding the Ring and Gollum, being chased by Goblins and Wargs, walking through Mirkwood and being attacked by spiders, heading toward the Lonely Mountain and Smaug. Those parts of the hobbit are more serious even if they were written in a lighter style.
Some of the banter between the characters is more on the funny side and there are many comical instances: Arrival of the Dwarves, Bilbo's dishes, coming to Rivendell, Bilbo coming up to the dwarves after he finds the Ring, and Beorn's house.

And I've been thinking about Sam Elliott's voice for Smaug. I would like to recind my suggestion. While he has a nice deep, interesting voice, I don't think he would be able to pull off the slick, smooth, mesmerizing tones and impression needed for the dragon.

In the movie Dragonheart the dragon's voice was done by Sean Connery & he did a great job! He would be good for Smaug's voice I believe! Vanye 8^)

Actually, I think someone had mentioned that Sean Connery would be a great Thorin Oakenshield, too.
