Here is today's cast for The Hobbit Movie according to IMDb: www.imdb.com/title/tt0903624/ Ron Perlman ... (rumored) Hugo Weaving ... Elrond (rumored) Doug Jones ... (rumored) Ian McKellen ... Gandalf (rumored) Andy Serkis ... Gollum (rumored) So who do you think Ron Perlman will play? He plays a pretty good big red Hellboy so maybe he will be Beorn! But he does have a gnarly countenance so maybe one of the dwarfs. I thought I had read (or heard) somewhere that Doug Jones will be Thranduil. I looked back in this thread and didn't notice that comment here. ------- This is from Del Toro's website www.deltorofilms.com/ProjectPage.php?projectid=41&name=The%20Hobbit: Only McKellen and Serkis are shown. I wonder where IMDb gets their info.

Cool! Things are moving along! I wish I had a job to help create the environment, monsters, clothing, etc.--I know I'm not good at acting!
That is slightly over 12 months of shooting. I imagine they are going to be getting serious about casting now--only 6 months are left before shooting the scenes. The cast will need costume fittings, axe fight training, etc. Gotta keep on the watch now for the actors to be selected and announced.

Jason Strathm...He could probably do a good Smaug voice....Even in the most intense situations in all his movies he always has that calm and in control demeanor which is great for Smaug!
However in the list that was quoted Anthony Hopkins would be good too!

I must have sloosed over this comment when I posted above. I imagine they will make Smaug's voice louder and more gravelly. The actor chosen will have to instill the fear, slyness, and mezmerizingness of Smaug into the roll himself. I wonder if they will have each actor do readings from several passages and then tweek them with the enhancements so they can listen to the outcome before they decide on who will be the voice of Smaug!
Well, Andorinha, it seems a long way off to us, but to get it done and produced, it doesnit seem like there is enough time to me. But Del Toro and PJ have a lot of experience in special effect movies so it is probably a snap for them!

Yeah, we need a time warp to give them 10 years to work it up proper, and then flash it back to us now...
Is Richard Boone ( "Paladin" ) dead and gone? His voice was great as Smaug in the animated version.

yes, Richard Boone has been gone awhile: Date of Death:10 January 1981, St. Augustine, Florida, USA -- died from throat cancer -- well! That may explain his voice being a good choice for Smaug in the cartoon!

I thought I had read (or heard) somewhere that Doug Jones will be Thranduil. I looked back in this thread and didn't notice that comment here. I posted that rumor on a thread in the Palantir Post section. It was mentioned in an interview with Jones. Either they are considering him or he is eying the Thranduil part. Ron Perlman doing the voice of Smaug seems likely. Aside from his past history with Del Toro, he's done voice acting in cartoons. So he has experience using nothing but his voice to deliver a performance. Then again, he also has experience performing through layers of latex and makeup (Hellboy) so he might make a good Thorin too. I just saw TheOneRing.net's choice to play Bilbo in that article Stormrider linked to: Martin Freeman (Arthur from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Oh my God, yes! That's perfect! He has a very hobbit-y look and can pull off prim and proper yet slightly befuddled.

Fredegar: They must have added more to that page since I first posted it!
Thanks for clearing up where we heard about Doug Jones as Bilbo.
Along with Martin Freeman, they also mention Colin Firth and Shia LeBeouf for the part of Bilbo. I like Shia but I can't picture him as Bilbo. I don't know much about the other two.
Speaking of Thranduil, the TORN link states:Funny about Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom!
I don't know who Stephen Fry is but the link states "I see an actor born to play a Dwarf." From his picture that is posted, I can see him as Bombur.
I think they are talking about the young Aragorn role here:I kind of like how PJ used many little-known actors and actresses for the characters in his LOTR monies. This sounds like it is becoming a movie for many who are already big stars.

I've only seen Martin Freeman in a couple films. I think he mostly acts in British television. However, as I mentioned, he would be absolutely perfect as Bilbo. Check out Hitchhiker's Guide if you haven't seen it (the books are better but the movie's not bad). It would be very cool if they cast him, as he would then have played two of my favorite fictional characters (Bilbo Baggins and Arthur Dent). Colin Firth's in a lot of romantic comedies-- Bridget Jones' Diary, Love Actually, Mamma Mia, etc., as well as Oscar Wilde/Jane Austen style period pieces. Good actor but I don't really see him as Bilbo. A bit too buttoned up and proper, not as much warmth. I think TORN is getting a little carried away with their casting choices. I agree that lesser known actors would be better, as you can more readily believe them as the characters rather than being taken out of the movie by a Johnny Depp cameo.

Do you think those are only TORN's casting choices or are they rumors their reporters have been hearing? I was under the impression it was news gathered from good sources, but reading some of it again, it does seem like actors TORN likes and not based on anything tangible.

Stephen Frye played Jeeves & Hugh Laurie (House) played Wooster in the BBC productions of the Jeeves & Wooster stories which you may have seen on PBS. He is a good actor & comedian too! Vanye 8^)

Vanye: OMG! Stephen Frye was so young in Jeeves and Wooster! I didn't recognize him from the picture at TORN! Hugh Laurie was so young, too, but I did know who he was from House and the unanimated 101 Dalmations. They kind of reminded me of Laurel and Hardy on that show. I've only seen a few episodes. I might have been tired when I watched them because I kept falling asleep. I should rent a few more from Netflix and give Jeeves and Wooster more of a chance. I will watch Stephen Frye more closely when I do!
