No, there is no L in this THING! However, one of your guesses above is very close!

What? The fan will give me a clue? What is Stormrider trying to convey here? The "fan, the fan, the answer is in the fan" -- so, from this hoarse and gnomonic whisper I deduce, there must be some message in the fan, but which fan?
The overhead fan, no doubt, yes, I'll check the fan! Hmm, time for me to dust the blades -- aha! That's it, "blades" -- so the letter must lie within that word! But not an S, hmm, nor can I get second duty from the A, or E, and there is no L ... that leaves "B"!!! YIPPIE, this game is so very easy once you use your noggin!
OK, that gives us Ent Bramcut! Chuckling with the glees of a mental-pride self-diagnosed I start dusting down the blades, but wait, what's this? A stack of pennies has been clumsily taped to the leading edge of the fourth blade, a counterweight set there long ago to balance the chattering passage of the blade through the air, and a penny, in the English system Tolkien would have used, was represented by the letter D, taken from denarius of the Romans!
Could the fan be telling me," it's D not B, you dumbie!" D for dust!!! Aha, two points of congruence with D only one with B! Oh, I love it when my brain works well, when all the ratiocinative skills leap trout like through the murky waters of our ignorance!
Yes, well then, Stormrider, I do believe I positively shall try a "D" this morning! Yes, I know you gape in amazement, "what's 'D' got ta do wid it?!" But I must insist, the voice of Fan hath spoken unto me, and "D" is whot we wants!!!

Oho! It becomes obvious (finally) that Pippin was on the right track all along, Ent Schlyzt, a beverage! LOL, OK, I'll guess: Ent-draught!
