ummmm.......except for Thorin maybe, Gimli is really the best structured character. I see no point in this poll.

I agree there is not much info on the dwarves, but we did polls on all the other races so I could not leave out the dwarves for those that love them!
I picked Bombur. The stuff written about him always made me giggle. Such a cute chubby guy!

I picked Balin. He was my favourite. He was understanding of Bilbo. I was so sad when he died.

I chose Gimli... He was the very first Dwarf to put aside his prejudices against Elves and to make friends with one. And he was always kind to Frodo, I really liked reading about his and Frodo's conversation in Fellowship, chapter The council of Elrond, I believe.

I also picked Gimli. Because - I agree with Fangorn on that - he was the best structured character, and because - like Alaere said - he put aside his prejudices and made an Elf his best friend. When I read the Hobbit, I remember I liked Balin, too.

Yeah... gotta go with the masses on this one. Of course I might be biased since Gimli is Elf-friend. ;D

I'm going for Gimli too, for the same reasons as other have given already. I know him best of all Dwarves, too.

I've always felt that Balin, Son of Fundin was the best of all the Dwarves. In "The Hobbit," he seems to be the most intelligent, the most learned, and the most capable of the Dwarves. Whenever Thorin cannot be on hand to "boss" things, Balin steps into the leadership role. Interestingly enough, Balin manages to get things done without the bluster and the regal "bullying" that seem to characterize Thorin's executive style.
Balin has a deeper, quieter sort of intellect, and he often makes peace among the other grumbling/ feuding Dwarves. Balin also seems less affected by such negative personality traits as the common Dwarvish greed for possessions. He seems less caught up with himself and the glory of his ancestry than Gimli, and Balin, a more diplomatic fellow than Gimli, would not, I think, have paraded the traditional dislike of the Dwarves for the Woodland Elves. Gimli does "get over" his initial distaste for Elves, his original prejudices against them, but Balin, I believe (extrapolating from his actions in "The Hobbit") would not have had so strong a distaste for the Elves from the very beginning.
Balin even works well with Bilbo, and seems to be the first of the Dwarves willing to accept Mr. Baggins as more than just a burden on their trek east to the Lonely Mountain. Even when he finds out that Bilbo has used a magical ring to assist him in some of his feats, Balin merely chuckles, and does not belittle Bilbo as a comrade, and accepts him as a fully tested equal.
So, based on perceived personality traits -- I like Balin!
