I'm still in shock at the fact you put Tom and Goldberry there with all the controversy surrounding their characters especially Tom's. Anyway, I choose Gandalf. I really like his character and the mystery surrounding him.

I did that because they don't really fall under any other category, plus I thought I would spice it up with some controversy! I put them here also because one of the website encyclopedias grouped them under here too.
But I went with the well known Maiar/Wizard, Gandalf!

It's definitely Gandalf! I have a very soft spot for him! He's like a father figure for me, and he can make you feel safe just by being around. And I feel kind of awed by his great wisdom.

For all the power and wisdom in this man, he can look at Hobbits with wonder and love. Illuvitar sent him back I think because there was no doubt about the purity of his spirit. To weild such great power and yet prefer to sit and have tea and a pipe, is a wisdom we may never know. He understood both nature and man. Truly, a man for all seasons.

Well, since I don't think Goldberry and Tom are Maiar , I chose Gandalf, like most of you. He's so very wise, but at the same time also down to earth (well, in Hobbiton, at least).

Gandalf the gray, Gandalf the white, Mithrandir... I like him the best. Maybe it's because I know him the best, I don't know.
Anyway, if Tom isn't a Maia, than what is he?
Love, Aeleorn

my very good friend actually thinks that tom might be Eru, just in a humans form, though he was decribed as being like a man, if not shorter, but could make enough noise for one. i don't really know if i should agree though, but it seems that it could possibly fit, seeing as how he goes about.......

Very well said Fangorn. Gandalf is favorite to so many of us because as great as he is he would actually possibly be one of us. (not exactly, but you know what I mean, I hope. He'd like hang with us lol)
The more I see of Gandalf, the more I am awed by him.
But I think you make a terrific point Aeleorn... we like him best because we know him best. If we had the same access to the other maiar chances are very good this contest would not be so lopsided.

I'm a bit surprised by Tom and Goldberry's inclusion as well. Making a few assumptions there. Obviously, I can't prove they're not Maiar but I don't think anybody can truly prove they are.
So, gotta vote for Gandalf. Noble, wise, compassionate, and powerful.

I voted for Olórin as well. I know him best, and he had a great part in aiding Middle-earth during the third Age. The only one of all Istari that were sent who actually was successful in his mission.

My favorite Maia would have to be Sauron. Without him, the entire history of the Second and Third Ages would be very dull indeed. Bilbo's three trolls would have evolved into some socially acceptable role, probably the owner/ operators of an all-night roadside cafe catering to the thronging horde of Elves, Men, Dwarves (and the occasional Hobbit) engaged in the peaceful trade among the realms of Middle-earth. Frodo would be going to Mordor on a package holiday tour to see the exotic landscape and buy hand-painted postcards of Mount Happy-Bang (formerly Doom) in full eruption...
Not a particularly engaging scene for romantic/ heroic tales. Gotta have the bad guys to give some meaning to the good!
