Even though I feel that everyone involved in the fight against Sauron were heroes in their own way, I believe that Samwise is the true hero of the story.
Without Sam, Frodo would not have been able to survive Gollum's sneakiness.
Frodo would have been captured by the Orcs and the Ring taken to Sauron if Sam had not been there to rescue him and taken the Ring himself.
Sam sacrificed his food and water to help Frodo have more strength to make the journey.
He carried Frodo on his back when Frodo could not go on!
Sam supported Frodo with love, friendship, caring, and purpose of the mission.
Without Sam, Frodo would never had made it to Mt. Doom!

I agree with Storm - Sam was the backbone. Kind of like 'the woman behind the man' so to speak. Sam showed true heroic traits - sacrifice, unconditional love, duty, loyalty - boy the list could just go on and on. Sam's just such a great guy!

I'm taking the easy way out....I went with all the good armies. I think Tolkien wanted to show that anything can be accomplished with team work.

again, i cannot answer this one, because every one, in hier own small or great way helped bring down sauron. i mean, even though gollum didn't try to destroy the ring, he pretty much helped to destroy it. and sam, he stood beside frodo, and helped him against gollum. there are so many ways that all of the characters helped, and i could go on, but time is not on my side this day, so i mustn't,

Ahhh....We return to the Great Debate! As always, I stand my ground and pick Frodo. Could Sam have carried the ring the leagues from the Shire to Mt. Doom and resisted it?
Could Sam have made the decisions that Frodo made along the way? To leave the Fellowship, spare Gollum, etc?
How many times did Sam say to Frodo, "I don't understand"? Did Frodo understand?
Frodo carried his burden out of love for all the life in Middle-earth. Sam did it out of love for one man. Wich is the greater sacrafice? To suffer for a loved one? Or all the stangers and strange lands that Sam could not comprehend?

I also picked All the Good Armies... Since it WAS because of everyone's efforts, that Frodo and Sam were able to fulfill their quest.
I also have much admiration for Aragorn, who had at first so much difficulties accepting his heritage, but eventually, he proved to be a true King... His road cannot have been easy, either.

I really didn't know who to vote for...but I don't think Frodo could have been successful without Sam by his side. So I chose Sam.

Oh Lord, we're back to this discussion, are we? And where is Rivers??? *pokes him*
I think they were all heroic in that they all gave so much, faced their fears, etc... Really, this could well be the question of the century. But if I had to choose one, it would be Sam.

I picked The Fellowship. I didn't go with the "armies" since armies are lead by someone. Each one of the Fellowship showed heroic characteristics. Without everyone doing their part, the quest would have been in vain.
It was a tough choice. I wavered between Sam alone and The Fellowship.
Fangorn chose Frodo. And asked some of the usual questions made by Frodo fans...could Sam have carried the Ring as far as Frodo.
But, I'll ask a question in return: Would Frodo have helped Sam, the Ringbearer as much as Sam the servant helped Frodo, the Ringbearer?

It was hard to choose one true hero, but in the end I went for Aragorn. From the time Gandalf disappeared he led the Fellowship on its path, and he became the great leader of the human armies. He also trusts the others, and he can let Frodo go his own way. Aragorn developped to a good king.
I didn't vote for the entire fellowship, mainly because of Boromir, Legolas and Gimli. All three have done heroic deeds as well, but for me theirs seems less compared to the ones of Aragorn, Gandalf, Frodo and Sam.
