Since I have been doing the Valar for the art contest, I have pondered upon the Valar and what they created and represent, and I really do think Aulë is my favorite.
Just looking at the land of our Earth you can see the variety of terraine--green grasslands, sandy desserts or beaches, mountains, fields, hills. The wealth of riches in the soil and rock is another reason for liking Aulë for providing the land with those things.

My favorite is Ulmo. I've seen some pretty amazing artistic interpretations of him and he usually has that epic Poseidon-esque sea-king grandeur with the watery form, long flowing beard, deep blue eyes, etc. I also find the ocean to be a very soothing and breathtaking sight that serves as a reminder of just how small we all really are. Plus, his name's just fun to say. C'mon, say it with me now: Uuuuuuuulllllllmo!

Freddie: I voted for Ulmo too! There is a website called Chronology of the Silmarillion which has a painting of Ulmo w/Tuor & Ulmo does look like Poseidon rising out of the sea--trident in hand! It seems such an appropriate image for a Valar in charge of the waters of Middle-earth. The paintings on that site are great & are by Roger Garland, Ted Nasmith & John Howe. They are helpful in visualizing the stories in the Sil. Vanye

I've voted for Ulmo as well. He's very wise, and he was very near to the peoples of Middle-earth. The fact that I love the ocean might play a part in my vote as well.

The Vala lord I find most intriguing is Namo of Mandos. He stands quite isolated from the others, a plutonic figure wrapped in silent mystery, he hold the hroa of the damaged/ "dead" /imprisoned Elves until the final moment of judgement when Arda shall be re-made. He is also the Doomsayer of Arda, the only one of the Powers who apparently has (almost!) a full knowledge of the fate and destiny of Valinor/ Middle-earth (the other Valar apparently have forgotten the full song and its actuality once they entered Arda physically, so that they remember Elves and Men will rise, but not exactly where or when, only Mandos knows...).
