Gandalf’s Delay
CT says that it is very difficult to figure out the step by step chronology of what JRRT was developing at the end of Book One (FOTR) and the beginning of Book Two (TTT) because he moved back and forth trying out new ideas and abandoning them or changing things so much that everything was not clear on the sequence of development.
There are several notes on rewriting the story from the start again. Gandalf doesn’t know anything about the Ring other than it makes one invisible. It is Frodo’s idea to set out because of dreams he is having after learning more about the Ring from Gandalf after many years of absence on his part because he (Gandalf) has been looking for answers about the Ring.
Again: Who is Trotter? A disguised elf and friend of Bilbo’s in Rivendell who was once a Rivendell scout and pretends to be a ranger (this was struck out).
Then the appearance of ‘Trotter’s’ true name – as a Man: Aragorn. He is a man of Elrond’s race (Turin—struck out) descendant of the ancient men of the North—and one of Elrond’s household. Hunter and wanderer. Friend of Bilbo, knew Gandalf, found Gollum after hearing Bilbo’s story. Gandalf arranges with Trotter to go towards the Shire and keep a look on the road from the East and hands him a letter to Frodo. Aragorn pretends to be a ranger and hangs out at Bree. Reason for wooden shoes—no need since Aragorn is a man.
Trotter not a hobbit but a real ranger who lived in Rivendell after much wandering. Descendant of Elendil. Tarkil.
Autumn 1939 – There is a very explicit account written of what caused Gandalf’s delay—Giant Treebeard, his captor, disappears—but not for good.
-time scheme won’t work for Gandalf to be ahead
-Gandalf behind at Bree. Knows Trotter whose real name is Aragorn—asks him to watch the East road for Frodo in case anything happens to himself (Gandalf). Visits Bree on way back to Shire in Sept. but is pursued and tries to get round to west of Shire.
-Black Rider pursue him—Gandalf not powerful enough to go against them unaided since the king is a wizard—he dare not go back toward Shire.
-He is besieged in the Western Tower –and can’t get away while five Rider guards him. BR’s discover where Frodo is and they ride away to find hinm. Three are ahead and three follow Frodo but miss him, three come behind—Gandalf follows after.
On backside of the new plot are unconnected notes:
-Bill Ferney’s pony to stay in Rivendell—yes
-Tom Bombadil never leaves his own land—not known to Butterbur
-Trotter’s real name is Aragorn and is a Ranger (descendant of Elendil?) Bilbo and Gandalf both know him. Previously was caught in Moria and taken to Mordor and tormented. (this was kept from Trotter’s change from hobbit to man) Gandalf brought him back towards the borders of the Shire in April
-Frodo’s red sword is broken and he brings Sting. (What red sword?—did I miss something?)
Four time schemes are given for Gandalf’s movements and I am not going to type all of them but I will mention that Ham has replaced Odo and he is captured in Crickhollow and rescued by Gandalf—no other detail on that given.
