Where would I start threads about such subjects as "Farmer Giles of Ham" or "Smith of Wooton Major"? Thanks, Fan

Hi Fan: I've created a sub-board under the Other LOTR Tales section in the Tolkien Manuscripts area entitled : Non-LOTR Tolkien Writings and here is the link: tolkiensring.proboards30.com/index.cgi?board=talkPlease start any new threads for those short writing on this sub-board.

Stormrider, I tried to view the "short works" board as a visitor, but it was unavailable. The fact that it is "non-LotR" mixed with "LotR" seems to be a bit confusing. Thanks, Fan

Fan:
Have you tried to view other boards or forums as a visitor? Were you able to see them? I think I may have selected a member only option when I set this one up. I can change that.

Well, I changed it to "anyone" but went to look at the other boards and they are all exclusive to "registered m e m b er s". Is there any particular reason you wish this board to be open to anyone?
It was our intention when we set these forums up that only m e m b e r s would be able to start threads and reply to them in order to keep fly by night postings and comments to a minimum.
What does everyone think? Should we open the forum up to anyone or do we want to keep it exclusive?

I did not mean for visitors to be able to post....only to view!
When I come to the home page as a visitor the "Other LotR Tales" board shows that the last message was on Oct 5 in "the Treason of Isengard". When I log in, I see that the last message was on Dec 1 about Farmer Giles.
There are a few boards that can't be viewed as a visitor, which I totally understand, like the chat room one and the "Inklings board". At least I can see that there are messages on those boards because of the counters, even if I can't read them. When I go to the short works board as a visitor the message counter and view counter are blank. Thanks, Fan

Oh I see. There is a separate area in the board settings that is just for everyone to VIEW the board. Then lower down in the board set up, is an area for who can create threads and reply. I fixed it for everyone to view but only members to create threads and post on them.
I don't know why these settings were separated from each other. I would have thought they should be together.
