Hey dol! merry dol!,
So in three short days we have created 64 different thoughts regarding 8 pages of litrature. Since we are moving on to "Boating" tomorrow I would like you to know that Rivers and I will continue to study the "Adventures" proper board should any have further comments or insights. Several of the boards will of course be used for duration of the class "Poetic Devices", "Quest For Meaning" and "Nonsense or Meaning". This Recap board as well will run for the duration as a quick glance catch up on each Verse.
"The Adventures of Tom Bombadil":
From the beginning of the study several questions were posed, and in some cases we have come to find some definte answers.
1.The timeline concerning when "Adventures" occurs in relation to "Fellowships" is positivly before "Fellowship". The evidence being Goldberry and Tom are a couple in "Fellowship", they had only just become one in adventures.
2.Everyone seems to enjoy Tolkien's preface to the poems, as there were no negative comments.
3.Seems the majority feel Merry the author of this poem, however I added to that thread and am looking forward to some more discussion of this theory.
4. Glorfindle mentions, and I agree that Tom seems to have an almost Eastern phiolosophy to his actions, I would like to consider this more as we go. Could it be Tolkien checked ot Buddism now and Zen? Sorry couldn't resist.
"Two sides of Tom"
1. The opinion of "Nature Spirit" seems to be the concensus regarding Tom's character.
2.I brought up the Father metaphor and Sparrow adds a wonderful image of an Adam and Eve, or Father and Mother Nature, Also Zauber adds a point to consider from the "Fellowship", that it was Tom whom chose the blades which the Hobbits carried.
"Quest for Meaning"
1. Rivers uses an excellent quote here and Annie brings to light the question of Tom's usual commandment to go to "sleep". Is there more meaning to this word than we assume? I hope to read some more insight regarding this.
These are just some high points but everything I have read so far is opening up new ideas for me. So I hope everyone is enjoying so far? I'm going to put the "Boating" board up a bit early as I will be busy and can't be sure of what time I will have tomorrow.
Namárië,
Iarwain

Tom's face is red, his jacket is blue and his boots are yellow. No one has ever caught him in relation to wood, water and hill. He is like wind or fire. He is like a riddle from "Riddles in the Dark". He is truly a nature spirit.
