Here we come to the end of the Beowulf text, but not to the end of our discussion I hope. I am curious as to what people think about Beowulf's final actions in this section. He is certainly not acting like Hrothgar, sending a younger man out to do the task that needs doing. But is Bewoulf, in going to battle the dragon single-handedly, acting as a responsible King (as Hrothgar had cautioned him after Beowulf killed Grendel's mom)? Or is Beowulf acting out of pride?
I am reminded of StarTrek:Next Generation, where both Captain Picard and Riker are seldom both off the ship -- someone has to be in charge. Was Beowulf acting irresponsibly in leaving his country leaderless? Or, was he really, evidenced by the actions of his retainers, the only person available to slay the dragon?
