Sunday we begin our discussion of the Silmarillion! Welcome to all who have decided to join us on this journey.
Please check the syllabus board for our reading schedule. Everyone reads at a different pace, and some will finish the book long before others. But please remember to stick to the schedule for discussions. Let's try to avoid spoilers for the first-timers!
I will try to post two or three discussion "threads" each weekend (probably Saturday). Hopefully these will generate comments and debate (and occasional brawls). If anyone else has questions, comments, or insights that are unrelated to these threads, please start another. Just click on "new discussion" near the top of your screen.
This is a chance for us to learn from each other, so join in with your posts.
I've posted some reading helps under the thread "reading aids" on this board. If anyone else has reading suggestions - helpful hints for those new to Sil - be sure to share them!
I should note the limits of my knowlege:
I have read LOTR and all appendices enough times to have them nearly memorized.
I have read Sil multiple times - some sections more than others
I have spent time with these books together, hopping back and forth, following thoughts and questions, and analyzing this world.
I have read a couple of books about Tolkien, the person
I have read very little about Tolkien's writing (except the Shippey book), so I don't know what others have found.
I have not read "Unfinished Tales" nor "History of Middle Earth," so there's lots about M.E. I don't know.
But there are others here who can fill in the gaps - this is a knowlegeable community!
Let's roll!

Yes, we do have a very knowledgable community. Even though there are other sources we can bring into this reading of the Silmarillion, lets not take the thunder out of the next syllabus, by over-doing outside references. Lets make it a "straight" read through as much as possible. (For new members), after this reading of the Silmarillion, we will be reading it again but, in a different way. It will be more like a history course. We will be reading Unfinished Tales, The Atlas of Middle Earth and other sources, also. We don't have a good name for it, yet. It has been called "The Mock History Syllabus" and "History of the Ages" and it is floating around the General board somewhere.

I have maps from the Atlas of Middle Earth of Karen Wynn Fonstad that I can attempt to post somehow if anyone is interested.

I was gonna do the same thing but I don't have the time currently. If you want to scan the maps and then create a new photo album (let's call it MAPS), we can place all our maps in there. That should keep it neat.
Well, hold on ... I'll create the album now and if you want to throw the maps in there (assuming you have access to a scanner), please do so.
