My journey here has been a little confusing--"Cyberspace, what madness drove them in there?", but I am here and I think I can find my way back. I'm Almarae, (the computer demons insisted on the extra 'm', else I couldn't use the name ). I live in the Midwest of the US, read the Professor in my ill spent youth and basically kept him as a long lost memory for many years. Then PJ and New Zealand arrived to remind me of the magic of Middle Earth and I've been content to read and reread and re-watch ever since. I had the good fortune to meet some of you in Milwaukee at the Marquette conference last October, and I am glad our connection will continue. I greatly appreciate the companionship of all of you because the rest of my family seems to be missing the Tolkien gene. BTW they ask me to send you their thanks; when I talk to you I'm not talking Tolkien to them. ;D Now I think I'll mosey around and see what there is to see. almarae

Hello! Glad to see that you made it here! I have to agree that it was a good fortune to be able to meet some Tolkien Fans at Marquette! Anyway you arrived here just in time at the end of this month we are celebrating our 3rd anniversary so check out the Gaffer's Gab for that info, lots of fun in store there! Plus the Hobbit study just started up again so you might want to take a peak at that too. Any way just have fun!

Welcome to TR, almarae!
Ah, so there is a genetic predisposition-factor for reading JRRT. That explains the compulsive nature of the condition. Out of seven brothers and one sister, only two in my family seem to have a markedly expressive Tolkien penchant, so it must be a recessive gene.
One of the more lively topics discussed here concerns the movie version vrs the book version of Middle-earth. I tend to be a "book-purist" and grumble about the celluloid productions, but many others see the movies as excellent expressions in themselves, and useful for stimulating or re-stimulating interest in the books.
So, did you like the books better than the movie, or vice versa? LOL!
Hope to see your contributions on the boards!

Almmarae:
It is very good to see you here! It already seems like its been awhile since our trip to Marquette! We had such a nice time and it was great to meet some old friends and some new ones. Welcome!
There are quite a few threads to read here at the proboards forum since its start in midsummer last year. If you read everything here and want to read more, you can go to the Archive Forum on the old MSN site. We kept it because of the great discussions we had there and as reference. You can reach that link via a banner underneath the Tolkien's Ring site banner on the proboards home page.

Man, I almost missed this thread. I'm not used to these proboards and I look in the right hand column for bold type indicating posts made that day. But if posts are made after I check for the evening, but before midnight, then the boards reset and I don't realize that I've missed new ones. I just caught Almarae's name in the bottom frame as the newest member so went looking for her introduction.
Welcome, Almarae. Marquette was a wonderful experience, wasn't it? (Although finding lunch in downtown Milwaukee on a Sunday wasn't!)
Almarae writes some of the most intelligent posts... unfortunately she wasn't part of the Sil study at RTME but you can find some pretty cool ones by her in other sections, mostly the movie section since we were all pretty hyped with TTT. sigh... that was an age ago, wasn't it?

Thank-you all for the warm welcome, I am already putting my feet up by the fire and feeling comfy. Yes, I have opinions about book vs. movie and I will post them appropriately. Marquette does seem long ago, I agree. A few weeks ago I went back on a field trip with some students. It was fun to look at the display and 'see' the first night excitement with all of you in my mind's eye. BTW Magpie is quite kind with her statements--Magpie, I will buy you lunch next time I have a chance. At least you had a free tour. almarae
