Several places in Beleriand have been described:
King Thingol's halls of Menegroth in Doriath
Gondolin, realm of Turgon
Nargothrond, the caves of Finrod Felagund
The March of Maedros, plains and low hills where the sons of Feanor keep watch
Hithlum and the Lake of Mithrim, where Fingolfin and Fingon dwell
Nan Elmoth, the dark woods where Eol lives
The city of the Dwarves at Belegost
Where would you most like to visit... or live? Why?

I like the enchanted aspects of Menegroth, but I find that my inclination is more towards choosing a place where I like the ruler, and my favourite is Fingon. Therefore, I think I'll choose Hithlum. Defintiely not Nargothrond - even though I'm not so fond of the idea of living in caves.
namaste,

I think it would be great to go to Doriath,to the kingdom of Thingol just to be able to talk with Melian his wife because she was of the Valar. It would be fascinating. She was the only one of the Valar to marry a lesser being,Thingol being of the elven race and not Valar. He must have been really something to catch her eye don't you think? I'd choose Gondolin. It was the greatest Elven city ever built, and I think it would be an amazing place to see. I've seen artists renditions of Gondolin, and they're all just beautiful.

This is a great thread! How did I miss answering this one?!?!
Here are a few descriptions and pictures of the Realms to help everyone in their decision.
Thingol's Halls--The Thousand Caves of Menegroth in Doriath
Luthien Escapes the Treehouse outside of Menegroth by Ted Nasmith
Situated in the middle of a forest was a rocky hill with the River Esgalduin running at its feet. A bridge of stone was built over the river and was the only access to the gates. Past the gates, passages went down into the halls and chambers of the hill.
Elves and Dwarves worked together using their own skills to create the visions of Melian, images reflecting the beauty of Valinor. The pillars were made in the likeness of the beeches of Oromë and lit with lanterns of gold. There were fountains of silver, basins of marble, and floors of many-colored stones. Figures of animals and birds peering through branches of flowers were carved into the walls and pillars.
Turgon's Gondolin--The Hidden Rock surrounded by the Encircling Mountain
Gondolin by Ted Nasmith
Gondolin lies hidden in the Echoriath (a volcanic cone) and is only approachable by the Hidden Way consisting of a series of seven gates (known as the Orfalch Echor) which were constantly guarded: The Gate of Wood, The Gate of Stone, The Gate of Bronze, The Gate of Iron, The Gate of White Marble, Silver and Pearl, The Gate of Gold, and The Gate of Steel
The City of Gondolin was located in the Amon Gwareth which was a secondary volcanic cone and consists of many squares and roadways.
Caves of Finrod Felagund--Nargathrond
Nargathrond by J.R.R.Tolkien
Nargathrond was located in the Caverns of Narog under the High Faroth. The Dwarves of the Blue Mountains helped in the construction and it was modeled in the likeness of Menegroth.
March of Maedros--Sons of Feanor
A land of small hills bordered on the north by the plain of Lothlann which was wide and empty. The chief city was on the Hill of Himring (the Ever-Cold) and bare of trees. On the west was the Pass of Aglon leading to the gate of Doriath and bitter winds blew through there.

Fingolfin and Fingon's Hithlum and the Lake of Mithrim
Known as the Land of Mist because of the clouds sent by Morgoth when they first camped there. It was a fair land with cool air and very cold winters. Its borders were the Ered Lómin (Echoing Mtns) and Ered Wethrin (Shadowy Mtns). Most of the folk lived near Lake Mithrim about its shores but the chief fortress was at Eithel Sirion in the east of the Ered Wethrin.
Eöl's Starlit Woods--Nan Elmoth
Eöl Welcomes Areadhel by Ted Nasmith
It was a enchanted starlit wood when the trees were young when Elwë (Thingol) met Melian. During Eöl's residence the trees had become the tallest and darkest in all of Beleriand and sun never came there. Deep shadows fill the woods and Eöl set up his smithy there near his dim halls.
Belegost, Nogrod, Khazad-dûm--Dwarves
Great Halls and Mansions carved in the stone of the Blue Mountains and the Misty Mountains.

Turgon's Gondolin--The Hidden Rock is the place that I would like to visit provided I had a "Get Out Of Gondolin Free" pass, too! The fact that it is so well hidden stirs my inquisitive nature and sense of mystery. The sleuth in me would be very challenged to find this hidden Realm. Once I got in, I would love to see the Seven Gates. There is a wonderful description of all the Gates in Unfinished Tales in the chapter called "Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin." The only thing that does not appeal to me would be the fact that I could not leave once I got in! (That is why I want the Get Out Pass!)
I would also like to see Thingol's Halls--The Thousand Caves of Menegroth in Doriath. It would be wonderful to get a small glimpse of what Valinor was like. It really sounds beautiful.
