From: Lord_Algamesh (Original Message) Sent: 10/14/2002 12:06 AM Tolkienites! Welcome to our Fall Study covering the 2nd part of The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers! The ultimate goal of this study is to have fun. I think its very important for everyone to remember this. We read and study the works of J.R.R. Tolkien because we enjoy them; let's apply this doctrine to our group effort and we should be well on our way to one of the most entertaining and thought-provoking reading sessions we've had the pleasure to participate in. What a great time to read The Two Towers! We have the Peter Jackson film debuting on Dec. 18th (that's a mere 64 days away) and Tolkien-mania is swarming the globe! Following this read, we should be well-prepared to critique the film in it's full glory ... . Well ... on to Study Struture ... Later today, I will be posting the "Definition List" for the first three chapters. This is basically a list of important people, places, and things that I've picked out of the text. I may miss afew or duplicate something here and there but beaar with me ... there's alot of stuff. You are under no requirement to do anything with this list. It's being done for a possible future project down the road and this seems to be the best way to collect this information. During each week, everyone should read the assignments found in the syllabus on "The Two Towers Fall Study" page. Week One will be the first three chapters. At the end of each week, I will post a few thought/questions/opinions concerning the reading material. These will all be open for comment and response. Study participants are welcome to begin threads following my posts on Sunday evening/Monday morning. The only requirement is that any thread started by a participant needs to correlate with the material covered that week. Please title any new thread you wish to create with the week preface (Week One - , Week Two - , etc.). This should help us keep order on the board. Tracking threads from FOTR study will be continued here as well. If you own a tracking thread from the previous study, create that thread here as well and track it current with our reading material. DaleAnn ... if you could expand on this with a reply post to this thread I would appreciate it. That's all for now ... remember ... reading begins tommorrow and posting actually starts next Monday. Let's get the bookmarks handy! Algamesh

From: DaleAnn Sent: 10/17/2002 7:21 AM I was a bit confused by a couple of things in Algy's post: The only requirement is that any thread started by a participant needs to correlate with the material covered that week. He straightened that out for me by saying that he just doesn't want people to move ahead. I don't think that will be a problem since most of us are behind in reading! Tracking threads from FOTR study will be continued here as well. If you own a tracking thread from the previous study, create that thread here as well and track it current with our reading material. DaleAnn ... if you could expand on this with a reply post to this thread I would appreciate it. I have addressed this on the General board under Attn FotR Tracking Thread Owners. Please check out that thread if you own a thread and wish to continue it or give it away; or if you would like to start or adopt one. Thanks---DA * * * From: Lord_Algamesh Sent: 10/17/2002 11:28 PM Thanks DA for "tidying" it up a bit! Everyone ... if you do have any questions concerning the administration of this study ... How it works? What did Algy mean when he told us to ...?, etc.. then please use this thread to pose your questions. Let's consider the "Welcome" thread to be a resource for "tech support" during our study. This way, I'll be able to check a central location for any issues you guys are having with it. Oh yeah ... always remember, if you have a question or do not quite understand something, there's probably someone else who is also at a loss. Don't hesitate to ask ANYTHING! You will help yourself and probably a few others in the process! Algamesh * * * From: Majah Sent: 10/23/2002 11:59 PM Algamesh; thanks for the clear, consise and thought provoking discussion topics. i am already enjoying what i am learning (again/new?) about The Two Towers. i appreciate the excellant work you have done Majah * * * From: Lord_Algamesh Sent: 10/24/2002 9:54 AM Guys, I will be adding two more dynamic threads to the discussion. Expect these to appear for Week One reading tonight or tommorrow (whenever I get my computer at home back online ... I've been moving this week ). The first will be a Chapter Summary thread ... this will be a READ-ONLY thread for quick reference on what occurs in the sequential chapters. The second set of threads will be focused on the Songs/Poems that we run across (Boromir's Funeral Song, TreeBeard's Song, etc.). This thread will be interactive and your opinions/thoughts will be welcomed. Keep yer eyes peeled ... coming soon! Algamesh

From: Lord_Algamesh Sent: 10/28/2002 9:49 AM Guys, I've posted 5 or 6 Discussion topics for Week Two thus far today and I am just letting you know that there is more to come. I'm currently at work and my posting will be spread throughout the day so expect more topics by day's end. Algy * * * From: Lord_Algamesh Sent: 12/2/2002 7:15 PM Tolkienites! As you can see, I have posted the Week Four material within the past week and I've begun the process of posting the Week Five material. I hope to have this completed in the next couple of hours. Expect the Week Six material within the next couple of days as well. I believe I will be removing the "Definition" threads. It's simply to difficult to go back and make sure I'm not duplicating anything (not to mention that Foster did a bang-up job in his book ... hehe). So, we will simply concern ourselves with Chapter Summaries, Discussion Inquiries/Comments, the existing Tracking Threads, and the reproduction of all Poem/Songs as they occur in the reading. This amount of material should suffice I imagine. Almost back on schedule and always remember, we can always come back and visit these at later dates. Keep up as much as you can but feel free to go back through the material and comment whenever it is convenient. Hope you guys are enjoying it so far! Algamesh * * * From: Lord_Algamesh Sent: 1/26/2003 10:48 PM Revival of "The Two Towers" Study The Two Towers Study will resume within the next couple of days. I will have to go back through the remaining material and come up with some appropriate inquiries along with the remaining chapter summaries. It appears that the study left off with Chapter Six Summaries and the first Week Six inquiry. Additional Week Six inquiries will be added and then we will continue into what was intended to be Week Seven (Book IV, Chapters 7,8,9 & 10). This will then conclude the reading and all that should be left will be continued discussion about the introduced topics. Allow me to stress again that although additional structured material will not be forthcoming from the study leader once the syllabus reaches a conclusion, anyone may add to the posted material from now until Mordor freezes over. We should never assume that our studies are closed once the reading is over ... they will always be open for review and comment. Stormrider has informed me that the ROTK study will commence in mid-March. As we continue our TTT study this week, let's begin preparing for this excellent study forthcoming ... See ya in the posts! ALGAMESH * * * From: Lord_Algamesh Sent: 3/5/2003 2:43 AM Well ... since my return to Middle-Earth, I had set a personal goal of posting Two Towers Study material each night until it arrived at its conclusion. I'm sorry to say that I will have to deviate from that plan this evening as I ended up having to go back to work late this evening and some other things going on around the ol' homestead. I don't think it's much of a problem though because I have been able to post several new threads over the last couple of days that may be "repliable" or at the very least thought-provoking ... hahaha. Anyway ... should resume posting TT Study topics again tommorrow evening. I believe that I will be posting material relevant to Book IV, Ch. 6 : The Forbidden Pool. Oh yeah ... I had a member who had sent me an email yesterday commenting on one of the study posts. This particular member thought that it might be against procedure to post publicly because he/she wasn't around at the beginning of the study. Let me just make a point here that these studies and the ability to participate in them is open to one and all at any time. There is not (and never will be) an exclusive sign-up list restricting members from commenting for any study. This community is all about participation and respecting (and cherishing) one another's viewpoints. Let's all take a moment to appreciate one another ... . Algamesh * * * From: Majah Sent: 3/5/2003 8:49 AM Good to see you Algy! Welcome Back! we missed you... Majah * * * From: Algamesh_of_Arnor Sent: 3/18/2003 3:24 PM Tolkienites! I shall be putting the finishing touches on the Two Towers study later this evening. This will actually allow me to shift my focus more to general participation on the site. We need to tie up this loose end anyway so that the board can be filled with the glorious ROTK material that Stormy and Annie is producing! So ... expect a few more discussion topics, the final chapter summaries, and the songs/poems lists. I've had a lovely time digging into the material and presenting some topics for discussion. Thanks to all who have participated and to all who will participate in the future. It's you guys and your valuable input that makes it priceless! Algamesh
