Chapter One: The Departure of Boromir
Our reading begins with the Aragorn searching Parth Galen for signs of Frodo, who has suddenly disappeared following a confrontation with Boromir. Aragorn fails to find Frodo but soon discovers Boromir pierced by many arrows and on the brink of death. Boromir admits to trying to take the Ring from Frodo by force and he also reveals that Merry and Pippin have been captured by the Orcs. Thus ends Boromir.
Meanwhile, Sam and Frodo have taken a boat and are have crossed the Anduin, determined to leave the Company and travel to Mordor alone. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli discover this too late to persuade Frodo differently and they then decide to follow the Orcs who have captured the other two Hobbits.
Chapter Two: The Riders of Rohan
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli follow the trail of the Orcs into the country of Rohan. Here, they meet Eomer, Third Marshall of the Riddermark and nephew to Theoden, King of Rohan. Eomer advises the companions that their pursuit is over. The Orcs were all destroyed the night before by the Rohirrim. The companions are then lent horses on the promise that they will return them personally to Meduseld, the Hall of King Theoden. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli travel to the place where the Orcs were destroyed and are unable to find signs of the Hobbits. They decide to camp under the eaves of Fangorn and search more thouroughly in the light of morning. During the night, they are visited by a mysterious stranger whom they think to be Saruman. The stranger frightens off their mounts and disappears into the night.
Chapter Three: The Uruk-Hai
In this chapter, we turn our attention to Merry and Pippin and their ordeal with the Orcs. Apparently, Saruman wants them brought to him alive and the Orcs begin to bicker and argue over what to do with their captives. The Moria faction wants to kill them, the group loyal to Sauron wants to turn south towards Mordor, but, the band who leads is loyal to Saruman and bullies the others ever westward. The Orcs soon find themselves surrounded by a contingent of Rohan riders and battle is joined at the eaves of the great forest known as Fangorn. During the night ... amid sorties and skimishes, the Hobbits escape the clutches of their captors and head into the darkness and shadow of Fangorn.
