Chapter Four: Treebeard
Merry & Pippin have escaped the clutches of their orc captors and have made their way into Fangorn Forest. It is here that we meet one of the most peculiar character in the story, TreeBeard.
(Just had to do it ... the image is too cool ... The Two Towers Visual Companion, Jude Fisher, HMCO).
After satisfying his concerns that the Hobbits are not Orcs, Treebeard takes them to his abode deep within the Forest. Along the way, the Hobbits learn many snippets concerning the history of Middle-earth and they also learn of the loss of the Entwives. Treebeard inquires of the events of the outside world and upon learning of the atrocities of Saruman, he decides to call the "Entmoot", or a gathering of Ents. Treebeard explains the treasons of Saruman to the Ents and they decide to bring war to Saruman. Merry & Pippin come along for the ride - to view the fate of Isengard firsthand ...
Chapter Five: The White Rider
Return to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. We catch up to the three companions as they attempt to find signs of the previously captive Hobbits. Their investigation leads them under the canopy of Fangorn and they are soon assailed by a mysterious old man, dressed in grey rags. Taking the old fellow for Saruman, the trio begin an attack that ends in futility. Casting aside his grey rags and revealing shimmering white beneath, we are re-introduced to an old friend ... Gandalf the Grey ... er, the White. Gandalf tells a bit about his ordeal with the Balrog ... but, more importantly relays two other pieces of information - the Hobbits are now safe with the Ents and Saruman is raising an army against Rohan. The companions and the White Rider ride off swiftly to Edoras in hopes to rally the aged king for war.
Chapter Six: The King of the Golden Hall
Gandalf & Co. arrive at Edoras and are met with suspicion and scorn. The city has closed itself off to the outside world and the King sits in his hall infected by the whisperings of Wormtongue - agent of Saruman. Gandalf and his companions gain entry to the hall and there, the wizard reveals Wormtongue for what he is. Theoden's strength and will are restored and Rohan is immediately called to arms. Wormtongue is given the chance to ride by Theoden's side to prove his worth but he runs off and cowers from the now restored king. Eowyn, the King's niece (sister-daughter) is left in charge of Edoras while the Rohirrim and Gandalf & Co. assemble to ride West against the forces of Saruman.
