Chapter Seven: Helm's Deep
Theoden leads the forces of Edoras across the grassy plains of Rohan, accompanied by Gandalf the White and his companions - Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. They learn that the Rohirrim forces already gathered in the West have been driven back at the Fords of Isen and that Erkenbrand, a worthy Horse-Lord, was leading the retreat back to Helm's Deep - an ancient fortress built by the Numenoreans in ancient times. Gandalf urges Theoden to lead his troop to Helm's Deep while he attends to another urgent matter. Theoden and his men arrive at Helm's Deep (discovering that Erkenbrand had never made it) with little time to spare, Saruman's army approaches swiftly upon their heels. The siege of Helm's Deep begins and rages on into the night. Saruman's forces breech the outer defenses and swarm into the outer courtyards; splitting the defending forces and trapping Theoden, Aragorn and others within the Hornburg - the central tower of the fortress. Theoden plans to ride forth with the dawn and "make such an end as will be worth a song ...". Aragorn pledges to ride with him. The Rohirrim sound Helm's Horn at the first glimmering rays of the sun and Theoden leads a valiant band out of the tower and upon the field. Gandalf reappears with another force of gathered Rohirrim (including Erkenbrand) from the western ridge and Saruman's forces are hemmed in on all sides. To the east ... sheer walls and denying exit to the valley, a forest of menacing trees that suddenly appeared during the cover of night. Frightened by the tidings of the new day, Saruman's army retreats into the mysterious wood and are never seen again.
Chapter Eight: The Road to Isengard
Gandalf states his intention to ride straight to Isengard and confront Saruman concerning his atrocities. Theoden joins him on this journey taking only a small group of Rohirrim as Gandalf assures him that they travel for parley, not combat. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli accompany the group as well. Gimli tells Legolas of the wonder he witnessed within the caverns of Helm's Deep and the two make a pact to journey together after the strifes of this Age and visit the Caves of Aglarond and the Forest of Fangorn. As they approach Isengard, they notice smoke and what appears to be vapour in the distance. Gandalf remains close on what he believes may be happening within the Wizard's Vale. Upon arriving, they see that Isengard has been sacked and that the entire River of Isen has been re-routed to pour into the Vale ... extinguishing the fires of Isengard. They meet back up with Merry & Pippin and learn that the Ents laid siege to Isengard and tore it stone by stone to the very ground; Saruman is apparently being held hostage within his own Tower of Orthanc. Gandalf and Theoden march off to find Treebeard while Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the Hobbits are left together for a much anticipated reunion.
Chapter Nine: Flotsam and Jetsam
Over a bit of supper scavenged by Merry and Pippin from the pantries of Isengard, a recounting of the siege of Isengard is delivered to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. Saruman fought bitterly with the Ents through the night but their slow anger and vast strength was not to be denied by the hands of a renegade wizard. Pippin also recounts the arrival of Wormtongue and how he fled into Orthanc in terror of the Ents. We leave the chapter with Aragorn concerned about finding pipeweed from the Shire among the wreckage of Isengard. A small matter to his mind perhaps but a worthy note for the reader, of things to come later in the story ...
