Chapter Ten: The Voice of Saruman
Our heroes in Isengard meet back up ... gathered together in front of the monolithic fortress of Orthanc. Gandalf calls for Saruman to step forward and explain his actions against Rohan and his treachery in the White Council. Saruman emerges from Orthanc and immediately addresses King Theoden; attempting to sway his favor by way of his mystical pesuasive powers. He tries to convince Theoden and Co. that he is a victim of circumstance and that an alliance between Rohan and Isengard is still desirable. Theoden sees through his deceptions and refuses to ally with Isengard ... rather, he suggests that peace with Isengard will ony be possible with the death of Saruman. The wizard then turns his attention to Gandalf, but, Mithrandir is clearly aware of Saruman's tricks and he laughs at the futile efforts of the once powerful wizard. Gandalf offers Saruman redemption if he will but leave his petty and selfish schemes behind him and join forces with the free peoples against Sauron. But, of course, Saruman's pride gets the better of him and he refuses to repent of his actions and schemes. Gandalf is left with little choice and strips Saruman of his powers, breaking his staff and rendering him powerless. Saruman storms back into the recesses of Orthanc and the parley party turns to leave. At that moment, an object falls to the ground nearby. Apparently, Wormtongue heaved a heavy orb outside of a high window attempting to harm Gandalf or others. To Saruman's dismay, the object tossed as a missle was nothing other than a Palantir - one of the lost seeing stones of Numenor. Pippin picks up the object and is quickly relieved of it by Gandalf. The company stops to speak with Treebeard on their way out of Isengard and he assures them that the Ents will vigilantly watch Saruman and prevent him from leaving Orthanc.
Chapter Eleven: The Palantir
Gandalf, Theoden and Co. leave Isengard and begin their return journey towards Helm's Deep and then on to Edoras. The company rides until sunset and sets up camp at the mouth of the Wizard's Vale. During the night, Pippin finds that his thoughts continue to drift off towards the globe that he had in his possession for only moments earlier that day. He seems drawn to it and after much self-debate, decides to relieve Gandalf of it for a while. Pippin obtains the Palantir and unwraps it. His gaze is immeidately transported to Barad-dur and, to his horror, he finds himself confronted by the Great Eye. Sauron holds his gaze for a few moments before Pippin shouts and falls unconcious to the ground. Gandalf interrogates the hobbit about what infromation Sauron was able to gather and he is soon satisfied that no harm had been done. Rather, the event may actually turn out to be a good diversion for Forodo and his mission. He surmises that Sauron guesed Saruman had a hobbit captive and was forcing him to look into the seeing stone for torturous purpose. Pippin recovers from the encounter and the Palantir is passed to Aragorn for safe-keeping.Later that night, the company is startled by the appearance of a winged Nazgul flying for Orthanc. Gandalf rushes the group into action and rides Shadowfax with all speed towards Edoras. From Edoras, he plans to take Pippin and travel to Gondor and the City of Minas Tirith!
