Last Tuesday, I attended the "LotR Symphony" here in Philly along with Zauber and Olorie. The venue where the symphony was performed (The Mann Center) is an outdoor venue. Many of the seats are under cover, although the seats in the back (and the lawn seating, naturally) are exposed. There were abnormally heavy rains on Monday; our area got 4.5" of rain. Things had dried out a bit for Tuesday, so we didn't have too many problems with mud, puddles, etc. Thank goodness, our seats were under cover so we would have been alright, even if the weather gods were not smiling on us By the time we parked, and walked into the Mann, the music was just beginning. Howard Shore was to conduct, but a scheduling conflict arose, so he was replaced by John Mauceri (the Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra). In the press release announcing the replacement, John was given credit as having worked closely with Howard in developing the music for the LotR soundtracks. He clearly was very familiar with the music, and did a wonderful job conducting. He led the Philadelphia Orchestra (who also seemed to really enjoy the music). We spent the evening transported to Middle-earth, reliving the tale through the music. The artwork made a wonderful accompaniment to the music. The Keystone Singers did the chorale work, and the Boys Choir also performed. The featured vocalist, Sissel, was fantastic! She has a flawless voice, and just resonated with the audience. Speaking of the audience, it was a very mixed group: ages, ethnicities...how marvellous that so many people can connect both with and through this music! There were more than a few tears shed during the performance...at the conclusion, the lady sitting in front of us was sobbing! There were many enthusiastic ovations, cries of "Bravo" and "Brava", general whooping and hooting with delight and appreciation. It seemed like it concluded all to soon for the crowd, who would have happily sat through the entire program again! It was altogether a memorable night (even without Howard!) I confess that I sat with my program the next day and burned a CD with the featured tracks (at least, those that have been included on the Soundtracks) so that I can continue to relive and enjoy this wonderful experience. So it definately was a moving experience from the sound of it! Wonderful! How nice to experience the concert with other good old Tolkien's Ring fans, too!
What type of artwork was projected (I am assuming it was projected) to accompany the concert? Was it art from the known Tolkien artists or scenes from the movies or perhaps even "fan" art?

It was the Alan Lee/John Howe artwork; it really was a lovely accompaniment to the music. The enormous screen was suspended behind the vocalists, so it was clearly visible to the entire audience.

Hey Hilary!
I attended the symphonies here in Antwerp, Belgium. You can read my post about it in 'music'. That Sissel indeed has a great voice. She did a magical performance of Into the west. Her voice gave me goose bumps.
Well, I hope the rest of TR get to listen to the concert aswell. I hope Howard Shore is planning on releasing a live cd of one of the concerts he did (with Sissel of course!).
Love, Aeleorn

Hey yourself, Aeleorn! There's an old saying: Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it! Well, in this case, you will get it! I had read about this somewhere else, but confirmed it at Bravo! webpage (link below). http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/mmnr/bravo/
