Strangely enough, Frodo felt refreshed. He had been dreaming. The dark shadow had passed, and a fair vision had visited him in this land of disease. Nothing remained of it in his memory, yet because of it he felt glad and lighter of heart. His burden was less heavy on him." It is apparent that Tolkien gave little significance to the content of Frodo's dream but he felt it necessary to convey the result. Are we witnessing some sort of assistance that Frodo's own subconcious is producing ... some inner strength that is emerging at need? Is the dream a random, albeit fortuitous, event? Or, do you believe that these dreams are the work of some benign power ... giving aid to he who most needs it? * * * From: LovesBeren Sent: 12/30/2002 2:38 AM I just might get myself in trouble on this one... I'll be careful. Knowing that Tolkien's background was Catholic, I would say that he was trying to convey that there was spiritual intervention at work here to encourage him. Was it Gandalf from afar? perhaps But more than likely it came from prayers (by Galadriel or others) to Elbereth and moved the Valar sending comfort to him in a dream. I don't know all of the details of the intervention of the Valar... but it makes sense to me... Anyone else have any ideas? Luthien (Sarah)
