What is it about the Elves and their craftsmanship that causes Gollum to react so violently? Elvish rope seems to "burn and freeze" him, the waybread of the Elves is like "ash and dust" upon his tongue. The important point to remember here is that Gollum does not have the knowledge beforehand that these items are of Elvish make (or does he?). Can anyone offer up an explanation for this apparent allergy that Gollum is afflicted with? * * * From: LovesBeren Sent: 12/30/2002 2:28 AM He is wretched... He would know that the rope was made by Elves... it possesses a elven quality... Sam called it down from the cliff... although he didn't realize he could do that... Sam was sure, even if Frodo was not. Gollom hates all that is good. It reminds him too much of painful days when he was cut off from all that was good. I wonder if Tolkien has taken this quality and given it his own unique twist. It certainly brings out how miserable poor Gollum is. Remember how the sun and light hurts him? It is as if most of the world is against him. No wonder he responds positively to Frodo's kindness.
