From: Lord_Algamesh (Original Message) Sent: 3/3/2003 11:48 PM In the Week Six reading assignment, Chapter 5 - "The Window on the West", Faramir describes how the Numenoreans began to fear Death and how they attempted to reach the Shores of Valinor only to be turned away by the divinities. This brings to mind the Old Testament story about how the citizens of Babel decided to build a tower to reach Heaven but were halted by God in the process. Thinking about the two peoples, the rulers of each city and the results and outcomes ... exactly how similar are these stories and do you think that Tolkien drew upon the old Hebrew story heavily here? * * * From: Aeleorn Sent: 3/5/2003 2:26 PM Is it possible that Tolkien took two stories out of the bible and mixed them together in LOTR? I'm talking about 'Babel' and 'Sodom and Gomorra'.
Sodom and Gomorra were two cities where people also fell into evils and follies. God sent two angels, desguised as two beautifull young men, down to Lot. Lot was a good and respectable man. He and his family were told to leave the city because God was going to destroy the two cities. The bible says that ashes and fire rained down on the cities. (they were located at the shores of the black sea - archeologists found the ruins of two cities covered in ashes)
