The Men of Numenor were settled far and wide on the shores and seaward regions of the Great Lands, but for the most part they fell into evils and follies. Many became enamoured of the Darkness and the black arts; some were given over wholly to idleness and ease, and some fought among themselves, until they were conquered in their weakness by the wildmen.
I remember reading this passage and thinking that this description of the fate of the Numenoreans was much more grim than in any other reference material I had previously come across. As opposed to making a bunch of inquiries in this thread, I am asking for references to other source materials dealing with this specific subject. Please leave book title, chapters, page numbers, etc. so that we may delve further into what exactly happened to these peoples.

So Algamesh, I have great interest in this subject. I wrote a rather drawn out and detailed history, but I was "timed out" by Microsoft and it went to cyberspace. So without further whynning here's a quick list of the books and stories within to get a straight timeline.
The Unfinished Tales:
"Aldarion and Erendis" pg 185 The establishment of Vinyalondë in Middle-earth, Númenors first harbor.
RotK
"Appendix A" pgs 391 thru 393 The Realm of Númenor
The Silmarillion
"Akallabeth" pg 264" These things took place in the days of Tar-Calion"
"Akallabeth" pg 266 "Yet Sauron..." (The origins of the Ring-wraiths)
"Akallabeth" pg 268 to 270 Of Ar- Pharazôn
The Atlas od Middle-earth
"Voyages ot the Númenoreans" pg 44
I would enjoy discussion regarding some interesting points.
Namárië,
