April Showers Bring May Flowers even in Arda! Part of the beauty of Arda stems from its growing things--the Two Trees of Valinor, mallorns, elanor, simbelmynë, athelas, and yes, even mushrooms and taters! Therefore, the April poetry subject will be…
Plants of Middle-earth!
Do the colors of plants in Middle-earth inspire you? Or could it be the texture of the plants? Maybe it is the shape of the leaves or petals that grab your attention. The scents of the plants may be what you wish to capture. Or perhaps the medicinal qualities of a plant might inspire your nursing or doctoring nature. Whatever you love about a particular plant, allow it to fill your mind and inspire your words and put it down in verse right here on this thread.
The contest begins NOW and all entries are due before midnight on April 30, 2004. Once submitted, the poem will be considered 'final' and no further modifications should be made. The entries will be judged by member votes after the close of the contest.
If you have any questions, just email me stormrider@owc.net
NOTE: Please reserve this contest thread for the poems alone during the contest period -- out of fairness to all, please don't post comments here about the poems until after the closing date. You can, of course, send praise privately in email or chat.
Get ready...have fun...and GO !!!

Well.........Was it the Spring season taking us away from our poetry writing? Was it a topic that did not inspire you? Was it other important events that did not allow you time to do a poem?
For me......it was the search for new forums that did not permit me to even think of writing a poem!
Whatever the reason, I would like to postpone the poetry contests for a while to get our new forums set up and let us all concentrate on the nice weather and getting out and doing things in it!
So take a break all of you poets and we will resume the poetry contests at a later date to be announced.

actually Storm, i had written a poem but of course i was waiting for someone to post first and then i missed the deadline anyway!
it is one of my goofy ones so i am posting it anyway...?
Homage to "Taters"
Earthy, sturdy, brown and round.
Tasty, filling, warm going down.
Taters in the field, taters on the plain...
Taters in my garden sprinkled by the rain.
As you can see, they are my favorite dish.
When all i have is lembas, taters is my wish!
Majah
(who HAS been busy outside trying to work magic on her yard)

Majah - that is actually a great poem! Very hobbitish, and I like the rhyme and rythm of it. Don't ever again wait for someone else to post first! Who knows who might have been inspired had you posted!
Best regards

I have to say honestly, that I am not inspired by the topic. Maybe the topic might be good for a limerick , or particular type of poetry challenge, but I did not FEEL much like writing about flora. I tend to be more challenged to write about people or events where alot of emotion comes into play. Perhaps, an event like the scouring of the Shire, and how each Hobbit may have viewed it, or the Fall of Gandalf from the fellowship's eyes, the oath of Smeagol to the ring, Gimili's infatuation with Galadriel, The Ents anger at Isengard, the death of Boromir, the madness of Denethor, the climb to Mt. Doom, Pippin looking into the palantir, Merry's oath to Theoden, Sam's love for Rosie, a night at The Prancing Pony, the attack at Weathertop.
I invite others to list some good topics. I prefer a good one thought of by someone else, that I may not have considered. Something where alot of emotion and thought can be injected. Ideas anyone?

Those are excellent topics for our poetry contests and these could really get the poetic juices flowing! I see what you mean about the topic needing to inspire the poet and one about people or events does allow for more versatility and creativity. You don't mind if we use some of your suggestions in the future when we get the contests going again?

well, as one who enjoys reading these entries, but who has never entered, perhaps I should just stick one of Majah's delightful taters in my mouth and plug up...but I can't.
Majah, your poem is wonderful! Thank you for sharing it. I look forward to reading others when we resume.
Fang, I agree with Stormy. Your suggestions are great for future contests. However, this topic is super, as well. It's fun to have some fun topics to play with. Not everyone is inspired by the serious. It's important to have a balance so as not to be exclusive. I have sevaral ideas here.... a tribute to healing plants as they work their magic to heal heroes...tell the hero's story. Personification is always fun....the joy or despondancy of a mushroom on it's way from field to Hobbitt tummy, or the carrots snatched from the garden....the bushes Sam was hiding in when he overheard Gandalf's request of Frodo.....an Ent romance ....(do a Romeo and Juliet)...
I think I need to go away ...

Soleil!
What you just wrote was very poetic itself even if it was not in an outlined verse form! You made the plants come alive with what you said! And it is true....what attributes a plant has can be just as poignant a poem as one about a person or an event. Very well said!
So no matter what the topic of middle earth is for our poetry contests, it will be a good topic. And because some poets aren't inspired by certain types then perhaps another poet will be so the turn around should be very interesting in the future! I know I can't write about every topic we post and don't expect everyone to either.

I agree with SR, Sol. Your descriptions were almost a poem in themselves. Why don't you try your hand at a Plants in ME poem this month? If you do, I will try to come up with one also. Maybe we can still get a few poems for this months topic.

ATHELAS
The foil of Kings,
Not a sharp blade
but a dusty weed
in a covered glade
Brings back to life
Those who fall
With a Kingly breath
Uncovers the pall
The hands of the King
are healing hands
Rejoiced are we
to recover this band
ATHELAS, you are the might we need
To live again and perform this deed.
Fang

Mushrooms Among Us
We Hobbits are happy to have mushrooms among us
Though others may laugh and just call them Fungus
But fried in butter they taste just right
On a bright spring morning
Or a cold winter's night
We forage for them and pick with such glee
One for you and TWO for me
Steamed and Stuffed, or fresh and clean
In a garden salad crisp and green
The smell of mushrooms baking or frying
Gives me great joy--or I would be lying
The taste, the sent, is always among us
We Hobbits just can't resist this fungus!

Tree-Beard Sees an Entwife
Hroooooom! What is it this I spy?
Slender leaves and branches high?
And light tight bark looks real good on
This lovely tree I have come upon
Let my roots mingle with yours
Hugging, entwining, making us floors
where little roots can then sprout up
We'll gather the dew, in our loving cup
Root with me here, in this lovely abode
The rich dak soil will be our mode.
And Entlings will cover the Forest
So many young ones to send up our chorus
Hrrroommm Hroooommm!
We stride and we sing
Drinking the draughts
and making Entlings
The Forest echoes with glee
Here with my Entwife,
Here with me!
Fang

lol! For not being inspired by the topic of Plants in Middle-earth, you sure have turned out some very nice poems! I really like them! Great work.....but that is no surprise to me, you are an excellent poet!
OK.....since Fang and Majah have turned out some poems.....how about some others taking a poetic stab at it and we will keep this topic until the end of May and then vote on all the poems at the end of the month!
