Great article. Nice to see a well-informed defense of Tolkien's work. I get so aggravated with the literary elitism that dismisses Tolkien (and indeed, most of the literature and art that I enjoy) as juvenile popular trash. There is nothing wrong with a world built on one's imagination. And despite the differences from the world we live in, such stories can reflect and comment on our world in very powerful ways.
I'm shocked that according to this article Michael Moorcock and Phillip Pullman dismiss Tolkien. Seriously? They're both fantasy authors themselves! They might not even have careers if not for Tolkien's influence on the genre. Whether they like his work or not, that position seems very ungrateful and naive.

I googled: newsweek, Tolkien. Found quite a few hits on excerpts from the articles that are included in the Newsweek Special Edition. Thanks for the link, Andy!

Ooooo! The exhibit is coming to New York after October. That would be something to go see. I went with a bunch of us to Milwaukee, but the Bodelian collection, I've heard, has so much more.
