I've been keeping an eye on this story for about a week. The confusing part for me, in earlier incarnations of the story, was Tolkien Family involvement in a LotR TV series. The Tolkien Family doesn't have the rights to much of LotR other than the books themselves. So, I wondered what was misinformation in the articles I read. Now we know. The TV series won't be directly LotR. It will be "around" the series. I don't care in what Age the series ends up in, though I see The Silmarillion on top of my wishlist. I will watch and either be enchanted or enraged or a bit of both.

I don't think the writers of these articles know Tolkien's writings. The Silmarillion is ripe for an anthology style treatment. There are almost fully formed stories of Unfinished Tales and the Appendices. Some things in HoMe could inspire a limited series. There is, also, the LotRO style -- be around Lord of the Rings without being too intrusive. I'd actually like to hear a Tolkien Expert weigh-in. One thing I don't want is the amount of nudity seen in GoT.
Hopefully, no matter what, the interest in all things Tolkien will increase. Hopefully, that means that the game will last longer, and forums will again surge in popularity.

I'm nervous about the Lord of the Rings TV show. I hope they don't screw it up. Last news I heard said it's going to be set between the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings so we're potentially looking at elaborate fan fiction, much like the new plotlines in the Hobbit movies. That could go either way. I enjoy the way LOTRO fleshes out the corners of Middle-earth but a TV show would have different needs and would have to appeal to a mainstream audience.
Christopher's retirement was surprising. I figured it was coming soon, given his age. But the timing is interesting. I'm curious what that could mean for the show. Will Chris's successor have a different opinion about licensing? Will the other books (Silmarillion, Children of Hurin, Unfinished Tales, etc.) be up for grabs? Or at the very least able to be referenced?
In any case, I'm grateful for Christopher's work over the years. I may not have always enjoyed his commentary or the limitations put on adaptations but I'm very glad we got to read so many of Tolkien's stories. I hope who ever takes over as executor will have the same level of respect for the work.

I think Christopher resigned/retired, THEN the rights were put up for sale. I believe it is not a single person in charge, but a board. Time will tell if the board has the "Spirit" of Tolkien or $ in their minds. It's ok to have a little $ on their minds, but, I'm hoping they considered the proposals with what would be good for the books.

Oooo! Sounds like Amazon is serious about this. Second Age events to become mini-series?

Especially if they purchased the rights for a TV series for $250 million.

I can see using the Second Age in a very "GoT" way. Blockbuster Epic style. The first rumor I heard was that they were doing a young Aragorn approach, which would be more familiar to most. Perhaps, they will use the earlier Third Age as a sequel?
