Orson Bean, the voice of Bilbo in the animated Hobbit movie and of Frodo in Return of the King has passed away. Struck by a car in California (though he was 91 so he had a long life).
As you guys may recall, the Rankin Bass Hobbit movie was my gateway into Tolkien fandom and sparked a lifelong love of Middle-earth and fantasy in general. I was pretty sad when I heard about this. Reading about Bean's life, I don't think I would have gotten along with him as a person. He became very conservative later in life (I had no idea that he was Andrew Breitbart's father-in-law or that he shared some of his political views). That said, he will always be the voice of Bilbo in my head.
Side note: Evidently, his actual last name was Burrows, which sounds quite Hobbitish.
My husband mentioned to me that Orson Bean passed away. I read your link and was surprised how many things he's done. He sounds like he was quite a personality! How does one get hit by two cars? Good thing he had a long full life and was happy.
Rest in peace, Orson Bean.
