Has anyone listened to this? I downloaded it on the Audible app and have been listening to it while I work this week. It's pretty cool. Got the first part for free with a credit and ended up buying the other two.
This was an adaptation done in the 80s with Ian Holm as Frodo (he's been both Bagginses!) and Bill Nighy as Sam. I don't recognize the other actors. Holm and Nighy do a fantastic job with their roles, though it's hard for me to not picture Bilbo when Holm is talking. The other characters are mostly good too, though often very different from how I imagine them. I may just be used to the movie versions. Aragorn sounds much older and more austere than I'm used to (though in fairness, he's 87 in LOTR). Saruman's voice is higher than I imagined. Theoden sounds more like what I expect from Saruman, very deep-voiced and dramatic. Gollum doesn't have Andy Serkis's Donald Duck-like rasp but definitely sounds creepy and deranged. More like the Gollum in the animated Hobbit.
What's really cool about this version is how true to the book it is. So many scenes that were cut or altered in the movies are in this radio drama (Merry and Pippin's conspiracy and knowledge of the Ring, Glorfindel rescuing Frodo, Faramir rejecting the Ring, the Dead Men of Dunharrow attacking Pelargir, Eowyn's full speech to the Witch-king, deleted characters like Radagast, Halbarad and Dame Ioreth, etc.). It's fun to hear actors perform these moments. Still no Bombadil or Barrow-wights though (gotta get the story moving). Some of the Elvish/Old English pronunciations are a bit different from the movies but you can tell the creative team studied the pronunciation guide in the book and put effort into it. Lots of the songs and poems were put to music as well.
Overall, I'm digging it and was wondering if you guys have heard it.
