This Week's Shire dates are as follows: Sun 7 Aug in Shire Reckoning is 15 Wedmath Mon 8 Aug in Shire Reckoning is 16 Wedmath Tue 9 Aug in Shire Reckoning is 17 Wedmath Wed 10 Aug in Shire Reckoning is 18 Wedmath Thu 11 Aug in Shire Reckoning is 19 Wedmath Fri 12 Aug in Shire Reckoning is 20 Wedmath Sat 13 Aug in Shire Reckoning is 21 Wedmath Vanye Well, I have been watching this thread and I keep wondering how you know that the numbers of the days are not the same. For example, why isn't Aug. 8 called Wedmath 8 in Shire Reckoning instead of Wedmath 16? Is there a guide to reading and understanding the Shire Calendar somewhere?

Storm: Threre are a couple of reasons for this misalignment between our Modern calendar & Shire Reckoning; first by SR the first day of a year is the equivilant of 22 Dec,(first day of Winter) which makes our New years day correspond to 10 Afteryule SR! In other words there is a 10 day difference from the get-go. Second there is the rule that Shire months all have 30 days, Third, certain days ( 1&2 Yule , Midsummer's day & leap day have no day designation i.e. Mon, Tues Etc.) So all of the 'regular days will be on the same day(Mon.,Tues etc.) every year. There is what is called the Adjusted Shire Calendar which makes there be only a three day discrepancy at the beginning of the year any way. Should you wish to know more go to Appendix D in RotKor to Encyclopedia of Arda website & search Shire calendar! ::)Vanye

Well, that explains it then! And I should have remembered that it was in the Appendices of ROTK. I've read some of the Appendices, but did not get as far back as the calendars! I will have to go read that one now!
Thanks, Vanye!

I said I was a bit distracted & now I'll tell you what I was distracted by; on Sept 7 our house burned to the ground. So we were homeless (but not for long cuz the insurance company has taken good care of us & we are now in temporary housing until the house is rebuilt). However it sure gave us a new perspective on what the people of the Gulf Coast are going through!! We, however, have our jobs & our school & our friends & neighbors, they have lost it all & nothing may ever be the same for them again. So, by comparison, we are lucky, though we lost many irreplacable things we have salvaged some. We lost all of our 5 cats & a new litter of kittens, one dog, our Macaw, & a gerbil; we did however get all the other dogs out. My computer & all of my Tolkien collection were & are at a friend's home. We have saved a lot of family photos & some of my postcard collection. We will have a new house in 6 months or less, we missed no work or school, just some sleep & some of our sense of security. The lesson being that there is no absolute security in this world! So now here are 2 weeks of the Shire Calendar:
Sun 25 Sept in Shire Reckoning is 4 Winterfilthe Mon 26 Sept in Shire Reckoning is 5 Winterfilthe Tue 27 Sept in Shire Reckoning is 6 Winterfilthe Wed 28 Sept in Shire Reckoning is 7 Winterfilthe Thur 29 Sept in Shire Reckoning is 8 Winterfilthe Fri 30 Sept in Shire Reckoning is 9 Winterfilthe Sat 1 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 10 Winterfilthe
Sun 2 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 11 Winterfilthe Mon 3 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 12 Winterfilthe Tue 4 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 13 Winterfilthe Wed 5 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 14 Winterfilthe Thu 6 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 15 Winterfilthe Fri 7 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 16 Winterfilthe Sat 8 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 17 Winterfilthe

What a horrible thing! But yes you are very lucky especially when compared to what some people have been going through! It is sad that all the animals didn't make it out, but glad to hear that most of your dogs did. It is good that your Tolkien stuff made it too. I am really glad to hear that you and your family are ok!

Vanye! OMG! I am so shocked to hear this sad news. The main thing is your family was alright. It is sad that all the animals could not make it out though. I would be very sad to lose my animals if it happened to me. I know how hard this must be for you. So many gone! I am glad that you were able to salvage some of those irreplacable things but it must be hard to lose the ones that you couldn't save. I cannot imagine how it is and I am sure it is very devastating to lose so much. I am sure your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers were a comfort and helped you get through the initial loss and shock. Are they building your house exactly to the same floor plan or have you picked out different plans? Thank goodness for insurance.

This week's Shire Calendar Sun 9 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 18 Winterfilth Mon 10 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 19 Winterfilth Tue 11 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 20 Winterfilth Wed 12 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 21 Winterfilth Thu 13 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 22 Winterfilth Fri 14 Oct In Shire Reckoning is 23 Winterfilth Sun 15 Oct in Shire Reckoning is 24 Winterfilth Incidentally the Shire Week starts w/Saturday Saturday is Stersday Sunday is Sunday Monday is Monday Tuesday is Trewsday Wednesday is Hevensday Thursday is Mersday Friday is Highday We are rebuilding the house but w/a more modern floor plan as the oldest part of the old house was built in the 40's or earlier. And yes thank goodness for insurance: it's good to know after paying premiums for 30 years that they keep up their end of the bargain when something happens! We are living in a house rented by the insurance company that is several miles further from our jobs but it sure beats being homeless. Vanye

The name "Winterfilth" amuses me. It seems more like it should be for one of the months right after winter when the snows are melting and the grounds are always soggy and muddy. That would be more appropriate, don't you think?!
