Stormrider, doesn't it seem like the earlier versions of the Melian/Thingol meeting are very similar to the Luthien/Beren meeting? It seems to me that at one time these stories were one and the same (if even in just JRRT's head). Then at some point, diverged into two couples. Fan

Yes, I read that Thingol (or was he called a different name in that reading) came upon Melian singing and dancing in the woods with her long dark hair just as Beren came upon Luthien.
Tolkien must have wanted that meeting in his Sil history in some shape or form! He must have decided Beren and Luthien made a much better tale than Thingol and Melian and then switched the meetings and shortened Thingol and Melian's up.

Don't you mean "lengthened" Thingol/Melian's (into eons)? lol

Well, yes, Thingol/Melian's whole life story is much longer than Luthien/Beren's! After all they were Elf/Maia! lol!
But I was referring to Thingol/Melian's first meeting being shortened in the published Silmarillion. Then the longer first meeting was given to Luthien/Beren.
