Desi, her son Frodo, and I went to The Hobbit play put on by a local Catholic 7th Grade class. It was the first time Frodo had seen a play and he misunderstood at first! He thought he was going to be playing The Hobbit with other kids! He was a bit disappointed at first when he found that out, but once the play began, he seemed to like it.
Anyway, most of the students in the class were girls so the Dwarves and Elves were girls! The boy playing Bilbo did a fantastic job and only stumbled on his lines a few times (much to remember for anyone!). Gandalf was probably the tallest kid in the class and he was pretty tall compared to the rest of them! The boy playing Gollum sounded exactly like Andy Serkis and he slunk around the same, too!
The play lasted about one and a half hours and only had eight scenes. They did not go into Rivendell although when they passed it the Elves came out and sang the song. They skipped Beorn, there were no spiders, and there was an Elven Queen instead of a King (all girl elves to begin with anyway). They did not go into LakeTown. The Elves claimed part of the treasure was theirs and gave Thorin their magical Elven sword to slay Smaug (an Japenese festival dragon was used for him!) after Bilbo conned Smaug into showing off his chest. That was where it ended.
All in all, the kids did a pretty good job and Frodo did end up liking the play afterall!

The boy that played Gollum was terrific! My Frodo wore his cloak and Ring so when Gollum was on stage he held his Ring very tight and after the play he told me he did that so Gollum wouldn't find it. My Frodo also liked Smaug when he snorted and was stabbed. The play was worth seeing. I wish I had not forgotten my camera!
