My favorite is definitely Gollum. He's just such a complex fascinating character. While most of the cast is divided by clearly marked boundaries of good and evil, Gollum is that one tantalizingly gray area of the story. You're never quite certain whose side he's on at any given moment or if his more positive Smeagol qualities will triumph over the darkness. Because of this, I find him to be a very tragic figure that always wins my sympathy. Also, I just love his goofy speech patterns (speaking in third person, hissing, croaking, adding extra S's to words, talking to his Precious, etc.). I can do a pretty good Gollum voice and he's always a fun character to try and embody.

Boromir was that way too, though. And Denethor (in the book) is even more of a *grey* area character. I will hold a personal grudge with the brilliant PJ for ruining Denethor's character in the theatrical release, and not adding anything of value to flesh out his personality in the EE ROTK. It would have been easy to insert a scene of Denethor retiring for the night and taking out his Palantir for one last conversation with Sauron: then his madness would have been fully understandable. Aragorn's use of the Palantir was not satisfying to me either; his character should have been able to cut off the conversation out of anger and impatience and not fear.

I totally agree with you MtM! I was disappointed in the fact that Denethor does not use the palantir in the movie!!! THey make him out like just some scared jerk, but really he was afraid but with good cause because of what he saw, and then I was mad that they made his death comical by running off the cliff.
We are suppose to see Aragorn become mare kingly as the book/movie prgresses, but in the movie by cutting off the palantir because of fear is not very kingly!
