The Hobbit Study Art ChallengesGeneral Guidelines:• All media can be used and your work can be rendered by hand or by any other means as long as it is original…no digital altering of “borrowed” Tolkien images! (You must send a written email consent letter with a copy of your artwork attached to MajahTR@aol.com) • Each challenge will run for 4 weeks. • All members who enter will receive a special participation award! Cool, eh? An album entitled Hobbit Art Challenge has been set up in the Tolkien Member Photobucket AccountPassword: tolkienrules Please enter your picture in that album. We encourage you to post in this thread when finished and share a little on how you did the work. At the end of the 4 weeks, I will make sure that all of the artwork from that respective challenge will be posted in a thread on the art board to showcase the artists and their work. Let's have fun with this one...(and be sure to follow the Hobbit Study and the Poetry Contests as you work along on your art challenges!)

1st Study Challenge Dwarves in Action Week One The Unexpected Party (4 weeks to complete)
Draw your vision of one on the band of dwarves who descended on Bilbo in his home! The Dwarves features and their clothing are richly described in the book and will give you an excellent basis on drawing your favorite Dwarf.
(If you are ambitious and want X-tra credit with the Art Goddess, draw them all!)
Be sure to double check the general guidelines above and remember to post your pictures in the Hobbit Art Challenge Album.
P.S. You may leave questions and comments on this thread as it will be checked every day.

Thorinby Majah this was painted with watercolor and then scanned into my photo editing program...which i used to sharpen the image...which actually gave it the grainier texture look...which i liked a lot...so i left it that way! the original painting is smoother and lighter looking. there is also silver ink in the original on the hat tassel and trim around the blue but unfortunately that did not scan very well... i then played some with filters and used one of those on the picture at the top of the thread...it gives that picture the look of paint daubs...

Flies and Spiders by Desi Baggins I did this with colored pencils. It isn't anything fancy, but it is all 13 dwarves so I must get a very special participation award, lol!

Hi Desi; i do know that our friend Dwalin is being brought to us by Greenleaf. the guidelines above did not specifically mention posting the artwork in the thread as it is entered in the album but i do wish for you all to do that... i have emailed Greenleaf and i am sure she will post her art in her soon. i will modify the guidelines to encourage the artists to post in the thread when they finish and share a little on how they did the work and that at the end of the 4 weeks, i will make sure everyone is posted here...does that make more sense? ummmmm...we won't be voting tho... i made these as art challenges to compliment the study and did not purposely make them contests so that everyone would feel comfortable enough to share with us... there will however, be special surprizes that you will receive for entering AND i believe a little bird told me that there is some participation connection to the study for joining into all parts of this Hobbit Study, art and poetry...but you didn't hear that from me, ok? Happy Sunday, Majah

Majah, thanks for the email. I hadn't put my pic here because I thought that all the pics would be posted here later. This is Dwalin. He's entirely computer-made because I don't have a scanner. I drew him with the mouse in mspaint and then added the ground and the background in photoshop. I'm afraid I didn't manage to draw his beard tucked in his belt, as it is described in the book.

you are welcome Greenleaf! yes, i had originally stated in the guidelines that i would post the art from the albums at the end of the 4 weeks but it is more fun to see them now as they are being finished so i modified the guidelines to say that.
and i think our members enjoy hearing how the art is rendered so i am encouraging all artists to tell us a little on how their piece was constructed. thanks for sharing with us Majah

Thorin Oakenshield playing the harp, Bifur is on clarinet (horn), Nori is playing my favorite-the flute, Kili is on the fiddle, Dwalin on viola, and Bombur on the timpani (drum) * * * * * I really was impressed that Thorin and Company played instruments. I would have liked to have painted all of them, but time was running out and it takes me a while to paint. Each Dwarf and his instrument was done as a separate picture. I sketched them and then painted them in watercolor. Next I positioned them using my Paint Shop Pro Program and added the background, shadow, and rays of light with PSP.
