i realize we are in the middle of our planned Hobbit Study Art Challenges but.... i found my list of suggestions that our members have suggested for future contests!
i will list what was suggested already and ask that you all add your input in this thread.
Thanks Majah
Characters that were omitted from the movie... ex: Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, Glorfindel
Silmarillion topics The Hobbit book topics places of Arda -Hobbits' habits (sleeping, eating, singing, drinking, dancing, gardening etc... Hobbits?) Yes, Ents!...how about some Dwarves, Orcs, Maiar, and Valar, too? Oliphonts, Dragons, Wargs, Winged beasts of the Nazgûl, etc. The WOMEN of Middle-Earth (few that there are!) The Silmarills, the Two Trees of Valinor, the Sun and the Moon The Rings: 9 for Mortal Men, 7 for the Dwarf-lords, and 3 for the Elven-kings (I always wondered what all the others looked like) i like the idea of places, or we could do favorite battles, or second age stuff (not much is done on that one, except for the last alliance) favorite king or ruler be it man, dwarf, elf, or valar. we could even be extra tricky and illustrate something from the movie we would have changed perhaps the appearence of a character, scenery, or set.

Possibly something to do with stars? This is perhaps more Silmarillion based, although it figures a little in LOTR. If we broadened it a little into 'celestial' then we could add the sun and moon. Again... mostly Silmarillion based.
And if I keep thinking, there's water. This could include specific bodies of water... people/Valar connected with water... events or objects connected with water.
Celebrations? - Long Expected Party... Aragorn's coronation or wedding... the tribute to Frodo and Sam at the Field of Cormallen... the harvest parties of the Eldar in Valinor... etc.
How about: pick a favorite poem/song or quote from the books and illustrate it. (I would caution that we couldn't 'legally' include the text in the illustration...)

How about pick one of the Valar/Valier or Maiar and draw or paint him or her! That might prove interesting!

cool ideas all of you...
we have done mostly things from the Trilogy and now the Hobbit so it would be interesting to branch out in areas like the Sil...
(Majah realizes she may now actually have to read the Sil...gulp!)
the plant idea kinda hit me too..i can see it done like the way they do the scientific plants... what do they call those? Botanical art! so that will definately become a topic for later McD.
thanks for your suggestions they are wonderful!

Well, I think it's certainly possible that we could brainstorm on possible ideas or directions for any topic you pick. (Like for celebrations we could brainstorm a list of celebrations... or for water we could list characters, stories, items... etc) In that process, we could help each other with some of the canon outside of LOTR and the Hobbit. We could at least say... check out chapter X or something.
I like brainstorming... I think I not only get ideas I wouldn't normally but I get more ideas in my head from the stimulation of discussion. But others might be less inclined if they feel a bit protective of the direction they'd wish to take. I could understand that.

Since we are going to be celebrating TR's anniversary in January, i am leaning toward the Celebrations topic!
Do you think we need to brainstorm a list or do you think that is a topic that will speak for itself?
thanks for all your help everyone! Maj
