3rd Study Challenge Smaug in Action
Week Nine Inside Information (4 weeks to complete) I think we all remember (or will remember if this is your first time reading The Hobbit) our first impression of the dragon Smaug and his horde of treasures. Draw your vision of Smaug in action…(yes sleeping and guarding treasure are considered actions too!) As you can see, my first Smaug i made to be a logo title but i still thought it was kinda fun...? i drew my Smaug in pencil and then outlined him in black ink, watercolored and then added a bit of texture called "Noise" in PSP. And i animated the text with a dark red glitter...he he i did several versions of Smaug and used lots of various filter effects in PSP...i just love this big red guy! (as an art subject that is... ) i will post them during the month and share. Majah

I sketched my Smaug and then colored him in colored pencils for a change in media. I figured it would not be as messy as watercolors! I added the sparkles, lazer-beam eyes, and golden glow from PSP and made him animated. The file is rather large, so please be patient for it to load. Yikes! Desi mentioned to me that Smaug looks pink on her pc screen! He is not pink in the original! He is an orangy red color; so if you see pink, think orangy red instead! lol! My intention was to give him a golden reddish glow!Desi types: I have a special thing were pictures load at low quality to make pages load faster. I though I had TR excluded off the list, but I didn't so I clicked your picture and hit load with full quality and now it looks great! Smaug really is a fun subject!

When my 4yr. old son, Frodo, saw that Smaug was the art subject he got excited and then he saw that Majah posted a link to coloring pages. So he colored one of those dragons with his crayons. Then I got creative...I cropped his picture out, put it on a mountain background that was in my art program and I put a grain filter on it!

I think we should have a no excuse clause on this art topic....Since Majah posted the coloring pages here at www.coloring.ws/dragons1.htm I think everyone can either print one out and color it with crayon, colored pencil or marker and scan it in OR copy and paste the image into the paint program that come with most all computers under programs-accessories. This is not consider altering other artists work because these coloring pages have been put online just for the purpose of printing out and coloring. So no excuses for not being able to draw cuz that is done for you and no excuses for not having a scanner cuz you can use the microsoft supplied paint program!!! So let's all get busy!!!

This was a tough challenge! I love Smaug, but hate to draw him! I tried a water color painting, but his head ran and so did the sky around it. Then I tried to just draw him and color him with marker, but he looked very pathetic. So then I got inspired by the map in The Hobbit book. I just drew with pencil a mountain, dragon and river. Then I used a color filter to give the background a tan color, put on a grain filter to give it some texture and then put a torn edging on it. I did not follow the aligator looking dragon in the book map, but my Smaug doesn't look very scary, more like a giant bird-dinosaur. I added the weird compass with printshop. So here is my map drawing of Lonely Mt. and Smaug....

WOW! nice treatment of the subject Desi...this is what you call problem solving and i love the result! here is a sketch my niece Maris did and then i played around with colors and filters in PSP. it is such a huge image i placed it on a web page cause it was too big for Photobucket... Enjoy! Majah Smaug by Marisi made her original blk and white sketch into a coloring page you can print and/or download and color!

We have so many nice pictures of Smaug! this is just great!
Majah, all those filters really give depth and texture to the old cold drake!
Quenten, That is really a great dragon and you colored him really well. I like the mountain addition to it and the filters, too.
I am really impressed with Desi's ancient map picture of Smaug! Who said you can't draw a dragon--he really looks good!
Wow! Great colors, Maris! He sure has a lot of teeth, too! I really like this picture it is so creative!
