Since we are going to be celebrating TR's 3rd Anniversary (and also JRRT's birthday) in January, I am pleased to announce that the January Art Contest topic will be CELEBRATIONS! These celebrations can be about anything or anyone from Long Expected Party... to Aragorn's coronation or wedding... to the tribute to Frodo and Sam at the Field of Cormallen... to the harvest parties of the Eldar in Valinor... to the old man himself...etc. (Just include a short note as to why you chose the subject that you do.) Just a reminder that we are unable to use any existing Tokien images, photos or excerpts from the writings so your renditions will need to be original and of your own design. However, you may use any media including digital rendering to complete your artwork. (and I imagine a bit of prose in elven fonts can be used in a decorative manner here or there...he he) (You must send a written email consent letter with a copy of your artwork attached to MajahTR@aol.com) The contest starts tonight and will continue until January 30, 2005 Thanks and let's have fun and ...CELEBRATE!

It's coming.... I've been experimenting with paper, media and technique. Desi, you've got me intrigued (and wondering if we're working on the same idea ). I've got the rest of this week off of school and should be able to finish something.

Errr....I have a foreground sketched but not the main celebration that I wish to depict. I am not sure if I will use the foreground because it is rather large. I may have to shrink it down a bit if I do use it.
I also dug up the description of the celebration in the book and took notes on it so that I can try to make it as close to how Tolkien described it as I can!

I scrapped the foreground that I had started and began again with the main part of the celebration. Now I have it all sketched out and just have to start painting it! Whew!
I may add the foreground in with the paint program I have later....who knows! The foreground does help define what my celebration is about.

Well, here is my Celebrations piece. Original size is 8.5x11 inches. It's a mixture of chalk, pastel, Conte crayon and goache on black drawing paper. My goal for this month was to experiment with the medium of chalk, etc on dark paper. I'm not totally happy with it but I don't think I could do much better without revisiting the subject many times and, as I told my drawing classmates, "Practical Marilynn is killing off Perfectionist Marilynn." I'm going to allow the process (of learning and developing) to happen and to have fun. Click on the image to see a larger version.

As you guessed we chose the same celebration! So here is my version. I drew mine out in printshop using shapes then I printed it out on watercolor paper and painted it. Then scanned it in and added some special effects. Bilbo's birthday Fireworks

Yay! Majah! Way to go!
My sketch has some paint on it now, too! Yay! I need to get to it this weekend and next week. I really want to finish it and not leave it half done like my Bilbo in the tree in Mirkwood painting (which I will get back to eventually!)

Stormrider has down cast eyes and shuffles her feet as she asks: "Ermmm.....Can we have an extension -- like two weeks? I still have a lot to do on my painting."
