Gandalf is a dwarf next to Beorn! Smaug looks very ferocious! I like this calendar.

Sigh ... I know I am an exceedingly picky person ( picky...picky...picky...) but, why is Beorn depicted as being so scrawny looking, even if he is so tall? I would assume that Beorn would have to be both big and burly if he was to be able to transform into a giant bear ( or man-bear ) === Also, I don't recall any windmills at Beorn's place, but maybe I've just forgotten - I'll have to check on that...

June CotM Created a new Calendar of the Month for June on the homepage of: www.tolkiencalendars.comIt is probably appropriate given all of the talk about The Hobbit movie. Hope you enjoy it. Away from The Green Hill Country, Parmastahir Hello, Parmastahir! ~~~ I've just started exploring this thread, & your website as well -- ( it's all quite wonderful! ) --- Is there any way to view the past "Calendar Of The Month"(s)? I have now seen the latest calendar -- [ for September ] but I am eager to look at more of this calendar art, and when I went to the website, I couldn't seem to find a way to view the past calendars....

hmmmm...I thought Parmastihir was keeping his past calendar of the months with all their monthly pictures linked to each one where it is normally displayed on his website. But I don't remember which calendars were the past "calendars of the month" to go check it out!
Parmastihir: Did you type a comment on those past calendars stating that they were the calendar of the month of ___ year ___? Or better yet, keep a list of the past calendars of the month underneath the current one with the links to them? Wait! I think I remember you saying you were going to make a separate page for all the past calendars of the month--are you working on that?

"They" say that one should not start off any correspondence with an apology. But I have been remiss in not replying to your questions! In my defense, I'll only say that September had some of the last days of summer (and many that were better than those of the rest - especially an extraordinarily wet July around here!) With that said . . .
You can now find the illustrations from each past Calendar of the Month in the individual calendar listings. Taking the very first calendar (the 1969 Ken Rudolph [Tim Kirk] issue) as an example. You will note that the title of the calendar is green. This is a link. Click on it and you will open a page with thumbnails of the cover and six illustrations. Just click on any of the thumbnails to view a larger image of it. There are now close to 30 such links. As there are (or will be with the four new 2010 issues that I have collected) over 300 calendars, this is only 10% of the calendars. Not all will have such links as many are one-sheet issues.
And the CotM for October is now up. Am glad you all like this (or at least find it of interest.) My new website gives me enough space to make those extra pages and display what would otherwise be many hidden works.
Happy Autumn to all!

Parmastahir

Just took a quick tour of the latest "Calendar of The Month" - ( with artwork by John Howe ) Certainly, a gorgeous spread!
My favorites were January, May, June & July, & November...
it's a gloomy, cold-ish & very rainy day today, and I am safely tucked away inside the house at the moment, so I have a good opportunity to look over more of the calendars...

I just took a peek at that 1969 Tim Kirk calendar - I see a deference to the original illustrations made by Tolkien himself - but I have to add, in the drawings of Mr Kirk's that I first saw, ( which would have been produced in the time period vicinity of 1971 ) the drawing style was more self-assured and and technically advanced ...

Hulloo Ardo -
Perhaps the later works that you refer to are those from his Master's work which were published as the 1975 Ballantine calendar? By coincidence, Tim's work(s) will be published once again in the 2010 Beyond Bree calendar. It is the first that BB has done since 1994, and it will be in color. Dan Smith (who has created the recent Middle-earth Fellowship calendars) and Nancy Martsch (who edits the monthly BB newsletter) have lined up Tim, Ted Nasmith, Jef Murray, Peter Prokowniak, and Louise Ying Chen (if I spelled all of their names correctly) for this one. I ordered my copy only today. It's quite a who's who list of illustrators. (Ted did the 2010 Tolkien calendar, and Jef Murray has contributed to the HI/NETS calendars that I created in 2008 and 2009.) I don't know what Tim has contributed (new work or some of his older work.) If you are interested, I can provide ordering info (basically, Nancy's mailing address.) All proceeds benefit BB.

Greetings, Parmastahir ! ~~~
Well, actually, the first time I saw Tim Kirk's drawings is when I briefly had a subscription to Mythlore, the Fanzine put out by The Mythopoeic Society - at just about the time I mentioned - in the early part of the 1970's...
If you want to pass along that address, certainly I might consider sending for info ( at least ) this other material of which you speak - although we don't very often "send away" for anything in this household...

Hullo Ardo -
You can contact Nancy via email at: beyondbree@yahoo.com
She can answer your questions about the calendar. Ordering is via her at:
Nancy Martsch PO Box 55372 Sherman Oaks, CA 91413
BB is a gem of a newsletter. The papers presented and information available is quite remarkable given it's a completely volunteer publication (and VERY inexpensive to subscribe to.) But Nancy can give you more info on that, too.

Novembre CotM and Other Calendars Hello to all - Updated the Calendar of the Month for Novembre (not a typo!) at: www.tolkiencalendars.comHope you enjoy it. Also, added a page (which is very much under construction still) for the 2010 issues that have started coming out. Also, my daughter and I will soon print the 2010 HI/NETS calendar (now the third in this series.) Malcolm will have some for the exhibition at ADC in March, and René will have some on his Tolkienwinkel site, too. And Beyond Bree (as members already know) will issue their first calendar since 1994 for 2010 (many thanks to Lotho Sackville-Baggins) and in color, too! Away from The Green Hill Country, Parmastahir

My daughter and I printed the 2010 HI/NETS calendar yesterday. We only made 75 copies (and 15 of those are going to the illustrators who contributed artwork. If you are thinking of getting one (or need a Christmas gift that will be used all year long), please act soon! I was addressing orders today. Less than 40 are now available.
Hope this finds all well!
