According to interviews, PJ plays a dwarf in the opening prologue. I didn't spot him though. By the way, in The Two Towers, he was a man of Rohan at Helm's Deep.
The Nazgul weren't buried in the books. This is a change for the movie. Apparently, the Dunedain imprisoned them at some point, probably after the Battle of Fornost when Angmar was defeated. In the movie, Elrond says they've been at peace for 400 years and Galadriel mentions the fall of Angmar.
It's actually not that big of a stretch. In the books, the hobbits' barrow-blades had spells on them designed to hurt the Nazgul. So the Dunedain evidently had some experience with magic and warding off wraiths.
As for Radagast, I don't think we were ever told who all the members of the White Council were. He could have been one of them. Personally, I think that would be the most logical way to work him into the movie. It would have had the same result -- revealing the Morgul-blade and the evil doings at Dol Guldur -- without the ridiculous bunny sled chase scene.

From Unfinished Tales in The Istari chapter, Radagast didn't really want to have much to do with anything other than his animal friends and Saruman scorned him alot so he would not have been part of the White Council and would probably felt very uncomfortable with Sarumn.
Also
Radagast was more or less forced on Saruman and was unwelcome by him so he held "extreme scorn" for Radagast.

Boy, I just can't picture PJ as a Man of Rohan at Helm's Deep in TTT. I'm going to have to watch that and look for him. I never saw PJ in the opening prologue as a Dwarf either. That would have made the most sense for him to be. He probably makes a good Dwarf, too! Gonna have to keep my eyes pealed next time I watch it because it might be difficult to recognize him as a Dwarf!
I was surprised that Friday evening, the crowds were not really that bad. There were lines to get in, but the theater we were in was not completely packed once the movie started.

Boy, I just can't picture PJ as a Man of Rohan at Helm's Deep in TTT. I'm going to have to watch that and look for him. There's a close-up shot of him about to chuck a spear at the orcs. I was surprised that Friday evening, the crowds were not really that bad. There were lines to get in, but the theater we were in was not completely packed once the movie started. Same for my theater. There wasn't even a line to get in. I wonder if this movie is not drawing as big a crowd. Are people just busy with the holiday season? Are they worried this will turn out like the Star Wars prequels? Are they seeing negative reviews? By the way, CNN did indeed do an article about Hobbit fans. They used my photo in the slideshow. Check out photo #10: www.cnn.com/2012/12/12/showbiz/tolkien-fans-hobbit-irpt/index.htmlI didn't see you in there though, Stormrider. I also did a movie review for the CNN iReport site: ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-896630

Excellent additions to your Hobbit attire, Freddie. You certainly look even more authentic. I liked your review, too. I did not do one!
I wonder what the first weekend movie results were for The Hobbit. I haven't gone in search of them compared to other movies that ran.

On the news tonight they said that the movie made $84M for the first weekend & that is the highest ever for a Dec. opening! That sounds pretty good to me & they also said that it was higher than any of the LoTR- obviously! Going to go see it next week woo hoo! 8^)

I've seen the movie twice now. The second time I saw the 48 frames per second version that Peter Jackson is such a big proponent of.
It was odd at first. The picture was very crisp, like something in high definition, so that was good. But the movement was disorienting. Without a motion blur, everything looked like it was on fast forward. The Dale prologue moved very fast and my eyes couldn't process it at times.
After that, my eyes adjusted. It was like watching a regular movie from that point on. Maybe one or two fast movements that looked odd. Overall, not sure what I think about the HFR/48 frames format.

Lucky you! Did you notice PJ as a dwarf in the beginning prologue or was the HFR/48 frames format too fast to catch him? I would not like to see the movie with fast frames. Some of the collapsing orc bridges in the goblin chase scenes were too fast for me in the IMAX 3D version.

Some of the collapsing orc bridges in the goblin chase scenes were too fast for me in the IMAX 3D version. No, I still didn't see PJ. I was looking for him but the fast movements and lack of motion blur in that scene were just too much. I'll have to pause the scene when it comes out on DVD. I think my final verdict is that I prefer 24 frames per second. 48 frames is too disorienting when objects move swiftly and the ultra-crisp picture hurts the ambiance somewhat. I'm glad I saw the traditional version first. I might have been too distracted the other way around.

Going to drag the wife out to see The Hobbit, either Sunday or Monday... Will have to bribe her with a Sushi Dinner. OMG! She has to be BRIBED! Well, at least she is bribable! My husband says it is a waste of time for him to go out to the movies (any movie)--he just falls asleep--so no sense bribing him! Anyway, enjoy the movie and report back here on what you thought of it!

Still have not been able to see the movie, but have heard about Radaghast and a "bunny-sled?" Hmmm... Gonna have to pretend this is not Tolkien's Hobbit, but Jackson's, and try to judge it on its "own merits."
Sigh... hope at least it has some color, not just another blue-movie CGI. I keep thinking with all the computer gear, could they not go back over the finished products to introduce some brightness, something that approaches the old technicolor? Gumble, grumble.
Going to be a rainy day here, will try to get the wife out.
