In other news, has everyone seen the trailer for The Desolation of Smaug? I didn't realize that we hadn't discussed it yet. Overall, it got me excited as we got glimpses of Mirkwood, the Woodland Realm, the spiders, Beorn, the barrel escape, Lake-town, Bard, and even Smaug! That really surprised me. I thought they wouldn't reveal the Smaug design until the film was released. Thranduil's Hall looks incredible. I love the bridges made from massive tree roots and the Feanorian lamps hanging from the ceiling. On the other hand, the trailer also had a fair amount of unnecessary action and Jackson inventions. It looks as though the barrel ride will be an action scene with Elves and possibly Orcs chasing them down the river. We get some scenes of Legolas, which I'm okay with as he's Thranduil's son and would have been around, but also of Tauriel, the new character that I'm on the fence about. If she ends up being a minor character who's simply the Captain of the Guard, I'll be fine with her. If they build her up into a major character with lots of invented scenes, I may dislike her. It looks as though Beorn (or another bear) tries to attack the Company. This is a change from the book but I'm okay with it. Introducing the Dwarves two by two would never work in a movie. Most likely they will enter Beorn's Hall, he mistakes them for trespassers and tries to attack, and Gandalf clears up the misunderstanding, at which point Beorn changes back to a human. That's my guess anyway. Azog is back, which dismays me. He was the part of the first movie that I hated the most -- the biggest change to canon and a pretty cliched villain for the sake of having a major threat in film one. I want him to die horribly in this movie but I have a sinking feeling that he'll stick around until the Battle of Five Armies. *sigh* What are your thoughts on the trailer, guys? www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnaojlfdUbs(Just noticed this post started a new page. In case you missed it, I also have a post on the previous page about the extended edition of film one.)

Loved the Bilbo in the top of the trees scene with the butterflies. That is a favorite of mine. Legolas has that right-in-your-face bow shot still. ;D Thranduil has very dark bushy eyebrows, rather odd.
Smaug was pretty much shadowed so we didn't get a good look at his golden-red coloring or his body. But still kind of surprising seeing his head even. Why wasn't Bilbo invisible when Smaug was looking around the corner at him? That isn't right.
Bilbo was sliding around on the hoard too! Just a very quick shot of that not enough to give me the LUST! sigh heh heh!
Beorn's snout is very large! Of course, bears look extremely large to Twizzle in LOTRO so I guess that is the right perspective for Dwarves and a Hobbit.
I liked the woodenly cave look of the Elven cave. That was pretty good what I saw.
Now back to previous page to see what you said about the extended version of part 1 of the Hobbit.

I can't believe they cut that Elrond/Bilbo scene out of the theatrical version. That was really quite nice. Well, Freddie, I will let you know after I get my EE whether there are more nice scenes like that rather than the PJ enhanced non-story additions.

Well, Freddie, I will let you know after I get my EE whether there are more nice scenes like that rather than the PJ enhanced non-story additions. I really liked that scene! Wish they would have cut some of the Goblintown fighting, which was way too long, in order to keep that one! I, too, am planning on buying the EE. If there are more scenes like that one above, maybe, maybe PJ might start to redeem himself. Then again, I'll probably get mad again at Azog and the bunny sled, to name two out of the bunch. I have no plans on buying the regular version. Fan

I really liked the trailer! Probably better than the movie, though. I get the Elven chasing the barrels to make it more exciting. I get the introduction of an action heroine (Tauriel (sp?) ) -- As long as she doesn't follow them though their adventures! Fan

Looks like Lake Town has been considerably enlarged, intrigued here, something of a London tenement look to it from the brief glimpse...
Yeah, I guess to keep the action level up we have some sort of fight to introduce Beorn to the Dwarves?
Don't care for the whole Azog thing much...
Glad they have Bilbo in the treetops...
Thanks for url Freddie!

Not sure if anyone is online but there is a live online event about the new Hobbit movie today. It starts in about 10 minutes (sorry, I should have posted about this earlier. Been busy today and it slipped my mind. Wasn't even sure I could watch it myself). Peter Jackson and some of the actors are hosting it. If you miss it, there will be a highlights video on YouTube later in the week. Very sorry for the late warning. I forgot all about this last night when we teamed up in LOTRO. TheOneRing.net will have the event streaming here: newboards.theonering.net/forum/gforum/perl/gforum.cgi?post=659537;sb=post_time;so=DESC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unreadEDIT: Event is happening now!

Again, very sorry that I didn't pass the word along sooner. I feel bad about that but my mind is on a lot of things lately. Not sure if the footage of the live event has been posted yet but here is the sneak peek that they showed at the end (basically a new trailer): www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfflhfn1W-o

Thanks for the trailer Freddy! Hmmm, actually getting somewhat anticipatory about the final installment. A sort of vaguely "transmuted" air of excitement replacing my general cynicism...
