They must have added more to that page since I first posted it!
Thanks for clearing up where we heard about Doug Jones as Bilbo.
Along with Martin Freeman, they also mention Colin Firth and Shia LeBeouf for the part of Bilbo. I like Shia but I can't picture him as Bilbo. I don't know much about the other two.
My wife and I just attended a Book Club meeting at a library on Tuesday night ( actually, the first time we had done that sort of thing ) which was discussing a relatively new book entitled:
The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society
written by a Mary Ann Shaffer & an Annie Barrows...
In spite of the frivolous sounding title, the story is actually a fairly serious one ( although not without tinges of mild humor in it )
- it concerns people in Guernsey ( one of the Channel Islands ) and people in England, just following the end of WWII,
but also contains much retrospection of events ( and the sufferings of people ) during the War as it was happening -
The entire story is written in the form of letters from the various
principals in the story, but you still develop a sense of the characters' personalities from reading the letters, and reading what others have to say about them in their letters, and so on...
One of these main characters is a Mr Dawsey Adams,
who comes across as a very simple, unpretensious man,
sort of steadfast and quiet and shy with depths to him which remain under the surface, and which he does not bandy about
in order to promote his own self-importance or boost his ego...
Anyway, at one point in the discussion of the book, the mention of its possibility of being made into a movie of some kind was brought up -
( personally, I don't see this book has necessarily having
"major movie" potential - although I think it could work quite well as another BBC series adaption - not that I would object to seeing it made into a feature film - it is a pretty good story )
One of the book club participants jumped on this part of the conversation to put her plugs in for Colin Firth as filling the
( hypothetical ) role of "Dawsey Adams" ( when and if this movie adaption was supposed to take place )
She enthusiastically mentioned this a few more times at other points in the conversation...
So, anyway, I took a peek at what I could find out about
Mr Firth on the Net, & here are some general impressions -
He looks fairly ruggedly handsome, and he seems to have had an extensive and varied acting career...
But actually, in my mind, I already had a different actor in mind already ( for this imaginary "Mr Dawsey" role ) -
his name is Brendan Coyle, who plays the part of
"Robert Timmons", the father of "Laura Timmons" on the recent
BBC series: Lark Rise To Candleford...
Mr Coyle is one of those less known, less glamorous actors, it seems to me, who might also not be such a bad choice for the role of Mr Baggins in the upcoming "Hobbit" movie -
( of course, I don't know if he would be interested, or even if he would be considered )
And, actually, from what I have seen of him in this Lark Rise
series, he does seem to be best at playing the
"strong, silent type" - the man who keeps most of his thoughts to himself - although you can tell by the expression on his face that he is still thinking about things, ( all the time ) even if he isn't always talking a lot...
Now, does that make for a good Bilbo?
I don't know - perhaps there could be some other role in the story for him -
If anyone else has been watching this
Lark Rise To Candleford series, maybe you could let me know what you think about Mr Coyle...
