When the dwarves send Bilbo to investigate the light, the narrator notes, after all, "hobbits can move quietly in woods." What other characteristics of Bilbo are revealed in this chapter that make him a good candidate for burglar? a bad one? What characteristics would make Bilbo a "really first-class and legendary burglar?"

Bilbo was smaller than the dwarves and would less noticeable of stealth and sneakiness were needed. Other traits needed by a first class burglar would be wits and quick thinking. At this point, as Bilbo heads out to check out the light, I am not so sure Bilbo had the wits and quick thinking qualities needed.
Trying to grab the money bag, was not very smart and it was something that got Bilbo into trouble right away. Little did he know the bag would *sqwak* and get him caught. But we see that Bilbo learned to use his wits and do some quick thinking. Too bad his deal/trade-off didn't work and thank goodness Gandalf came along!
